I want to say yes, but that may be dependant upon the location. East of IH35 is black dirt, starting about 3 miles west of IH35 is caliche. I am on the west side of Belton next to the high school. They grow good in the ground here. I have 2 in the ground that came from the DWs home place. They were planted by her grandmother in the early 50's. we dug them up and moved them to our house.

Pa, don't mean to highjack the thread, but noticed your beautiful brugs, do you grow them in full sun or partial shade? This is my first year to try them, one is in a large pot, it's about 3' tall. It's in partial shade and has lost its leaves twice, but seems to replace them with no problem. The leaves get a look that I think looks similar to spider mite, and no flowers yet. I will overwinter in our shed with north light and heat if necessary, but am getting so discouraged probably will put it in the ground next spring and come what may! Can you give me any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

Mine get morning sun and dappled shade in the afternoon. I only have 1 that will take the full summer sun. I have 2 in the ground that get covered with a temp GH after cutting back. The rest get dragged in. I lamost have the temp GH up for the winter. send me an email my addy is in the profile

That may indeed be milk and wine crinum. I know very little, but it is old and it had the white trumpet with the tell tale wine colored ribs.

I have brugs both in containers and inground. They are having great flushes right now after a very dismal year. Worst year for brugs I have had in the six years I have been growing them.

Thanks again Princealbert! It was not a straight line, but I believe that what grows well in Bell County is a crinum called Goweni. Scott Ogden in his Garden Bulbs for the South says this one dates from around 1820 and came to the South in the mid 1800s

I found some on Ebay's bulbsnmore. The seller is in FL but he bouth his at a small nursery near Temple TX! Whew!

I've got a couple of questions about crinums:

- How old do they have to be before they bloom?
- Also got some in bright light, but no sun. Never seen them bloom. Should they be in direct sunlight?

Also got a Brug to, but it doesn't get any sun. Bright light. And it's never bloomed.

Am I doing something wrong?

My crinums all get sun.......some are in full sun, and the ones that get the least sun bloom the least. I am no way an expert on them, but they do seem to like the sun. And as for your brugmansia, how often do you feed it? They are heavy feeders and if you want "flushes", you have to fertilize at least twice a week.

Cynthia, I love Nestor (bulbsnmore)! I have bought many crinums and rain lilies from him - I usually buy small ones so I can buy more, but the down side is waiting for blooms. I have also bought from Plant Delights (pricey) and from Jenks Farmer (LushLife Nursery) - his selection is small but they are gorgeous :)

Big question: How much sun do your crinums get? It looks like you have bright shade but maybe it is the time of day.

I noticed your mystery lily. The house across the street has a huge clump. neighbor bought another house and now her neighbor has a clump. Said it's 48 years old. I might have found its name but don't know for certain

Carrie, I have to confess - Maya is still in a pot - I hated to risk her in the ground! I'll put her out in the spring then keep cuttings in case she decides to be persnickety.

Cynthia, thanks for the applause. :) That garden is definitely a work in progress; I just set it up and this year plunked a lot of plants under the brugs - I hope to impose a little order next year, and maybe get some donkey poo from Carrie to help the plants along. The front, where the crinums and plumeria are, is pretty sunny; the back end where the brugs are gets morning sun then high shade from a neighboring oak.

While the flower of my mystery bulb looks like Tropical Giant, its habit is more like a surprise lily. The foliage emerges amaryllis-like in the spring, then dies down. The flowers pop up late summer, just bare stalks with blossoms on top. I dug it up from an abandoned homestead that was being clear-cut.

Hi, I've got Lin's mystery lily or its first cousin & have some links that I'd like to share. I clicked into here from the GW Bulb forum & hope I'm not intruding into TX & your thread! My milk n wine crinum pup has ***never bloomed*** & I'd appreciate advice. I took the pup from my mother's plant spring '06; I moved it into a 14 inch pot fall '09 because it was in too much shade & being in the pot helps me put it in the most sun that I've got. It must be happy because it had 4-5 pups last spring & just had 3 new pups recently. Cold weather followed by recent hot, rainy weather probably made it think it was spring. I know it doesn't like being moved. Is a 14 inch pot big enough? I'm giving it all the sun I can. If geraniums bloom in that area is that enough sun for at least some blooms on the crinum? Thanks so much!

criniums will grow anywhere,any soil,i even have some out in a cardboard box with hardly any soil on roots.i got them in somerville texas more than a month ago.have some in ground and some in pots,they'll survive anywhere.you drive by abandoned old homeh places and they're growing with no problem.best to you
