House finch disease

I live in Central IL, and over the summer have had two birds show up at my feeder with symptoms of house finch disease...one was a chipping sparrow and the other a song sparrow. Both birds had swollen heads, bulging eyes, limited vision and one had curled up feet/toes. I caught the chipping sparrow with a net, and found it to be emaciated. I placed it in a little carrier with food and water and put it in a sheltered location near my deck; it died within a few hours. Then a month or so later, the song sparrow appeared and was also almost blind. I offered food on the ground in a tray which he was able to find; however there are also many other birds feeding and I know this is contagious, so yesterday I netted him as well, and took him to a local vet who euthanized him for me for ten bucks. I am wondering if anyone else, particularly in IL, has seen any birds with similar symptoms and any advice on managing it would be appreciated. I took up all the "old" food and feeder trays, and put up a clean, sterilized feeder with fresh seed after I removed the sick sparrow. It is very sad to see them struggling for life like this.
