peanut shells for bedding?
Comments (13)sorry to bump a long dead thread... but... i picked up about a pound of worms from a friend who is an environmental scientist... an experiment had run it's course and he gave me the "control" group... i started them out in a plastic tote, and eventually ordered a Worm Factory and 2lbs of worms (more the merrier right? :) ) i had read on one of the worm farm websites that peanut shells were great bedding and the worms would love 'em... not sure which website it was.... so i added a few handfulls of salt free roasted peanut shells... they haven't been in there long.... they have softened and discolored.... but haven't broken down yet... neither have crushed eggshells placed in at the same time... so this thread is disturbing me a bit.... anyone else have experience with peanut shells in bins? roasted, raw, salted, not salted.... when you by roasted peanuts... are the shells coated with some sort of wax or soaked in a preservative? maybe boiling the shells for 10 minutes or so would ease the breakdown process?...See MorePeanut problem - not allergy related
Comments (6)One thing about roasting peanuts... because of the high oil content, they go from, "almost done" to "burnt" very quickly, so you must keep a sharp eye on them. I roast and flavor nuts all the time. I like to send a little bag of nuts in my husband's lunch as a mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack item as he likes them well enough to eat them instead of a candy bar or some such junk devoid of food value. If you like salted nuts, it helps to grind the salt into a powder in a spice/coffee grinder. If you've ever bought, "popcorn salt," that's essentially what you end up with, and it clings better than table salt. If you like the flavor of Smokehouse Almonds, you can mix 1/2 teaspoon of liquid smoke with 2 teaspoons of water, and toss this with a cup or a cup and a half of the raw nuts. I find it's easiest to put it all in a screw top jar and shake like heck. Leave them to soak overnight, and then roast them. Sprinkle with popcorn salt or other seasonings. I make a mix in my spice grinder of celery seed, salt, dried garlic, onion and a little sugar....See MoreLOOKING for: Boiled Peanuts
Comments (8)This is the way I make them and they always come out just right. * Exported from MasterCook * Boiled Peanuts * Recipe By : Reuben Ware Serving Size : 8 Preparation Time :0:10 Categories : Snacks Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method -------- ------------ -------------------------------- 2 quarts green peanuts 1/4 cup salt 2 quarts water -- To cover This is the amount of peanuts and water that fills my crockpot. Put peanuts in crock pot, add salt and water. Cook, covered, on high for 5 to 7 hours. Add additional water during cooking to keep peanuts covered. You can add some hot sauce to the pot if you like Cajun-style spicy peanuts. After you've cooked the peanuts to the texture you prefer, let them remain in the water for an hour to soak up the brine. Store in a plastic container in the refrigerator. Re-heat in a small serving-size bowl in your microwave if you prefer your peanuts warm. Peanuts can be frozen and will keep several months....See Moreroasting Virginia raw peanuts today
Comments (7)Those little burlap sacks have uses. They let air freely circulate among the contents and are handy for hanging up onions, storing kids toys such as blocks and dominos, or take them back to get refilled - Yum!...See Moreltcollins1949
