Black seaman is. Mine has huuuuge leaves, so that might help ID it. Could it just be another form of black krim?

Thanks for the PL variety. At least now I know there are Black PL beyond Black Brandywine(I think lol)I am going to have to get a picture up for reference.

Black Sea Man is a determinate. How tall is your PL plant?

I don't have an exact height as it is dark out at the moment LOL, and due to the crummy weather we had earlier, this is probably not what the full height would have been in an optimal season, but I want to say this plant is about 30 inches to about 34 inches tall. At this time the fruit(which doesnt feel fuly ripe) is a dark dusky smoky pink color....maybe not the full maroon that the Black Krim are, so I did speak out of turn on the color. However once they are completely ripened the color may be darker....plus the color always seems to look darker once I bring them inside for some reason.

If you dig around, you will find reference to a Black From Tula PL and to a Cherokee Purple PL. The Black From Tula PL is a very good tomato.

Marizol Korney is PL too, though not a widely distributed variety. It's Eva Purple Ball size/shape/speckling.

Maybe this would help more if you get some ripe ones. Most below except Marizol Maroon are available in PL too (BFT, CP, MK), and there's a Flathead Monster which is a PL derived from Black Krim but pinker.

I really like BFT this year, but have only gotten a few fruits, I don't think it's worth saving seed from an unproductive plant - So I'm excited to see a PL BFT! Is seed available commercially? Or do I need to start looking for a trade?

Here are a few pictures of the mystery pink/black...and a red just for color reference. The picture doesn't really capture the difference as well as I would like , sorry.

My purple prince plants are all potato leaf. I got these seeds from TomatoFest. Anybody else have experience with this variety?

Tracy, I've never grown it but those who list it in the SSE Yearbooks all say regular leaf, indet, etc.

If all your plants are PL it suggests another variety, but if only one or so were PL it would suggest a stray seed and there have been some recent problems with Tomatofest and stray seeds. So I don't have any idea what you might be growing if all your plants are PL.

Just a quick general note, but one cannot assume that a PL variant of an original RL is the same as the original with the one exception of leaf form. There are several ways that a variety can go to PL from RL and in some cases it can mean that more than one genes is affected.

I grew Black from Tula PL this year and it was a tomato machine. Excellent all around tomato. Am looking forward to growing Amazon Chocolate PL this year as the RL version I grew last year really put out some nice fruit as well. Spudakee Purple has always been a great variety for me also.
Even thought Flathead Monster's parentage is from BK it was definitely a Pink as Mark said and production was lacking.One black I grew last year that was RL was Rogers Best Black and it was the only one that surpassed BFT PL in production but BFT PL had better flavor for me. Ami

Doesn't sound like yours, but "Southern Night" was PL when I grew it. It is also determinate, and I think that combination is pretty unusual.

Carolyn- All the purple prince seedlings that I planted (about 15-20, I lost a few) were potato leaf. I got them from tomatofest and this is my first time growing them. My bloody butcher is also potato leaf.
What do you think the PP really is? The also sell Black Seaman, could they have been mixed up?

I have "Amazon Chocolate" which is growing as a PL plant.

Has anyone else grown this variety?

Two years in a row one Black Krim out of the eight seeds I planted each year has turned out potato leafed. Last year the potato leafed plant, although the most vigorous and biggest, didn't produce any tomatoes although it did have giant flowers on it. Same this year, the potato leafed is the biggest plant. When I give my tomato plant customers a choice of Black Krim plant they always go for the potato leafed one because it is much bigger and I have to warn them it might not be a real Black Krim but some mutation or another variety and tell them to pick a different plant.
