Either bald-faced hornets or the sort of yellowjackets which make aerial nests. In either case, it looks as if it's high enough to be out of the way, thus not a problem. If so, you can leave it be until the colony dies, most likely by November or December. At that time you can either remove the nest or leave it be. In the latter instance, the nest will gradually disintegrate.

Hi bandjzmom. Since you use Photobucket for your pictures, follow this procedure. Go back to your photobucket album. Move your cursor over the picture that you want. You will now see that Email & IM, Direct Link, HTML Code, and IMG Code came up. Select HTML Code. Copy it to your clipboard. Sometimes Photobucket will do it automatically copy it for you and sometimes it doesn't. Just to be on the safe side, you copy it. Come back to the forum or any other forum and paste what you copied in Photobucket. It should come up in the message. Try it.

Oh Konrad ,I just went throught this...you gotta shake the heck outta that egg then put it back in the nest. I would have lost all my Chipping Sparrow babies if they had not nested where I could monitor them. This baby grew 20 x faster than the chippers and was kicking the Chippers out of the nest.had I not interviened all the Chipper babies would have died and the Cow bird baby been the only child of the poor Chippers, they will raise it. Read my posts 911 pre fledging of Chippers snd so on..I am glad to say the 3 Chipper babies that jumped out of the nest prematurly have all fledged safely as did the Cow bird baby. (one thread "I cant believe my eyes") will tell the story. Please shake the heck outta that egg...you don't want it to hatch and you don't want the Cow Birds to come with their wrath on the babies that do hatch.

Looks exactly like a yellow jacket nest. Yes, the cells are very small...and the larvae are very small, too. Skunks are just one of the animals that commonly dig up these nests. Yes, they get stung plenty, but they don't care. ;-)
