Yurts

My boyfriend and I are planning a two week camping trip in September. We are going from Portland, Oregon down to Crescent City, California then over to Grants Pass, Oregon. Neither one of us aren't really experienced campers but it's not nearly as expensive as renting hotel rooms and I think it will be fun. We've decided to rent Yurts at the parks we'll be staying at.

I went and looked at a Yurt that is pretty close to where I live, it doesn't look like they have much for a mattress/pad on the bed. Does anyone have any advice on something I can take for more padding that won't take up much room in my car?

Yurts are round wood frame buildings covered in a type of fabirc, although I think the frame and cover materials can vary. The idea is that they are round and can go anywhere as long as you have a flat platform to set them on. I live in upstate Ny and hear of alot of homesteaders and seasonal people who have them. When we vacationed in Seaside Heights, NJ, we checked out campgrounds that had them. They look very romantic.
Why not bring a roll of foam, the kind with the little finger like bumps. I hear alot of people like them.
I don't think all yurts come with the same type mattress, it depends on the owner and what they decide to put in them. Call ahead and ask what else you might need to bring

In the summer I'll open up more ventilation, probably including a peak vent. I didn't do it yet because I haven't figured out a good simple cover yet. Eventually I'll find just the right basket, bowl, or bin for the cover.

some thoughts -- --how close do you want to be to your parents? Do they own land, or could you buy land together that would have space to put a yurt on? --lots in settled areas would be very difficult to place a yurt on, as you have discovered, because of zoning regulations and restrictive covenants, so rural would be better --be careful about buying cheaply advertised rural land sight unseen; often very poor investments (if that's what you're looking for) in undesirable locations, with no access or ability to install utilities, etc. --you might consider leasing; that is, both leasing a bit of property from someone in a rural area who has enough that they wouldn't mind you constructing a yurt on it and using it in the summers; also, if you build it near enough to a college, you could lease it to a student tenant during the school year and live in it during the summer --build two -- one for you, and one for a more permanent resident who could keep an eye on it for when you are not there --you might like the book, Little House on a Small Planet by Shay Solomon -- terrific ideas and resources for small, non traditional housing (see link) Here is a link that might be useful: Little House on a Small Planet This post was edited by Violet.West on Thu, Jul 17, 14 at 16:06

If a yurt costs as much as a solid wall bunkie I'd choose the bunkie. Several years ago my DH built me a garden house that is 12'x16' with a sleeping loft. We did it that year the Cdn. gov't gave rebates for home improvements to stimulate the economy so could claim expenses and got some money back. Even so it cost several thousand dollars. We did find some of the building materials and all the windows at yard sales which saved. DH built it all himself except for shingling the steep roof. I only use it to store garden decor, patio chairs and table, etc. but when the Grands are older they'll likely sleep and play in it and I'll hang curtains and decorate it. I'd like to have an outdoor privy nearby but that's another project. I live on a large acreage and at the time we had farm status so could build any size outbuildings and didn't need a building permit. Without farm status the size of outbuildings are limited and I believe one needs a building permit in this province.

Yes it is a small world where folk art is concerned. I am very jealous of a trip like that, although the political climate in that area today is a little unsettling. What an exciting journey! Somewhere long ago in my ancestry my mother's maternal line is related to the peoples of this area of the world. I had some genetic testing done and had surprise results. The highest concentration of women with identical sequencing is found in the population of Kazakhstan today.

Nehalem Bay State Park

Not sure if that's a campground that you picked. It's my all-time favorite.

The Yurts don't have thick padding and the couch is a Futon bed. But consider an inflatable queen size air mattress. Those can fold small and the air pumps are quite tiny.

If you studied this, you know you need to reserve months in advance - maybe 7 or 8 months in advance if you want two nights in a row. If you only need single nights, it's a lot better, but still reserve a few months in advance.

At least there is heat, light etc.. We had a trailer, and I use a tent and small cargo trailer now, but I still reserve Yurts myself. So streamlined. No set-up time at all. And there are lights and locking doors.

Harris Beach is a fine campground for coastal beauty. Quite few Yurts there too. They are very privately situated there.

Plan ahead, and you will have a fine time.

By the way, if you reserve a Yurt at Nehalem Bay State Park, try not to get one in A LOOP with a number below 10. The area around them is not as grassy or tree surrounded. They are okay. But try to get a Yurt that's on the INSIDE of A LOOP. Not on the exterior of the circle, but the interior.

The one around number 38 or 40 on the inside corner is one of the best, too.
