Gallinule Chicks

17 years ago

At the lake today, a pair of common gallinules with three chicks.

{{!gwi}}

I could never get all five of them together, the chicks were spread out and one parent was at each end. When I got too close, they disappeared into the marsh plants. But were making just as much noise. Those feet look unwieldy but I've seen them, even the very young, walk right up the side of a reed.

Also a tricolored heron ( I think thats what we're calling the Louisana heron these days)

    What gorgeous birds! And to have seen the whole family is really cool.

    The chicks...remind me of a puppy with big feet - which they will grow into!

    Thank you for sharing these priceless photos.

    Stunning photos! The size of the chick's feet make me wonder how it learned to walk on them. Thanks for posting those.

    Was back at the lake today and the gallinule family was still intact. The chicks ran and hid in the marsh (but kept up their chatter). The adults sidled up to me to determine if I was handing out bread.
