Barn Swallow Question
Comments (8)I've read where PM folks have lost many birds during chilly weather even extending into May. If your barnies don't eat scrambled eggs from a platform (you could even add some pulverized egg shells or mealworms) other birds would welcome it. It's worth a try and until the insects become more plentiful, it seems like a good attempt at nutrition. I'm sure you'll get lots of advice from more experienced people. Funny, my mom always had barn swallows nesting in the garage and she always fussed about those "darn birds" that pooped all over her car. LOL Linda...See Moreswallow problem
Comments (3)The problem is only for a few weeks then it goes away. If I knew how to post pics here I would show you what the babies look like when they first hatch (TREE SWALLOWS) and how beautifuly they fly when they leave the nest. They are a joy for us to have around, a couple weeks of mud and a little poop is well worth getting those new babies safley into the air. They are such beneficial birds. They will repay you for the rent many times over by eating millions of bugs....See Morebarn swallows
Comments (3)Today is one glorious day. I had a nest of swallows on my porch and today they all left the nest. I am all about living with nature...me not bothering them, them not bothering me. At first I thought it was an awesome thing to have them on my porch. I really enjoyed watching the adults flying around acrobatically to catch insects to feed their young. As well, I loved watching the chicks mature. Then, at a certain point, I realized that I couldn't even come out my front door, take the garbage to the curb or go collect the mail without the adults diving down at me aggressively. One day it took everything within me not to smack one of them out of the air as I came in from hitting tennis balls. What was once the wondrous beauty of nature because a real pain in the rear. They scared my neighbors, my wife, our visitors...even me. The balance was thrown off by the nasty birds so now they will have to find some other place to nest. I will be closing off the ledges of the columns on my front porch and painting them to match. Who cares if they cut down on the insect population if they don't allow you to coexist in the outdoors? Good riddance Swallows....See MoreWould sparrows bother barn swallows?
Comments (2)Research conducted in Maryland revealed that House sparrows reduced the fledgling success rate of a Barn swallow colony by 45%. However, since House sparrows aren't the best fliers, then I think if you placed your nest cup high, like this, it could work : http://www.americanartifacts.com/smma/per/sn730.jpg Perhaps using a modified version of the sparrow spooker (http://www.sialis.org/sparrowspooker.htm). You can also use monofilament or hobby wire, and tighten it (tie and weight it) , and hang them from the roof to the sides of the nests could work, although it can be brought inside the nest and possibly choke the young..etc...See Morejasper60103
