Fall Popup Camper Project

Although I'd just love an opportunity to do ONE MORE outing this fall, been doing the fall maintenance on the little camper, getting it ready to store until springtime.

One of the projects I'm into is re-doing the roof seams. My little Starcraft has the aluminum roof that needs to be re-caulked from time to time. The owner's manual says to use a #999A Dow silicone sealer. So far have not found a store here locally carrying this product. The local boat/marine supply store says that GE's Silicone II will do the job just as well. Anyone here up to speed on silicone sealants? Or, maybe, having just re-sealed your camper roof?

They are many different types of GE Silicone II.
You will want to use.
GE Silicone II Aluminum & Metal which is formulated for aluminum and does a great job.
Locally Lowes and other home improvement stores carry it.

Dow 999A silicone is a more "specialized" silicone and can be bought at more professional home builder supply stores I have bought it at Guaranteed Supply Company store (they are expensive) when I lived in NC. They have many outlets in North and South Carolina and Virginia.

If I, myself were sealing the seams on a Pop Up camper. I would have no worries at using GE Silicone II Aluminum & Metal to do the job.

Thanks Hippy for all the info ... and the cartoon!

Went down to Home Depot and all they had was the clear GE (I wanted white), so went on over to Lowe's and they had it in the "tooth paste" type tube, which is O.K. - but both the guys in that section of the stores that came by to help me said they though the "DAP Ultra" was the best, at least for application and tooling. So I ended up with a tube of each, one GE II and one DAP. Applied each to opposite sides of the roof and I'll see which one holds up the best! But I got to say that the DAP does indeed tool better.

On the label of both brands it says they have a "lifetime guarantee" - now, I wonder what that means? My lifetime, the lifetime of whatever I apply it to, or maybe the lifetime of however long these products are sold?

Still got the center part of the camper to do. And there, I'm waiting on a special 12 volt exhaust fan to install, right where the present roof vent is located, and I'll have to re-caulk that, too.

I've got a long list this year myself, although it is shorter than year's past. I hope to be able to sit and enjoy my handywork more often this year. - Decorate the outside of my garden shed with found objects and garden junk I have made over the winter. - Put in some walkways from the garden shed to two new gardens. - Create new bog-like garden. - Plant all the things I have ordered over the winter and in co-ops this spring (very long list). - Make two more walkways to the bird tree and to DH's woodshop. - Try my own Hypetufa projects (I'm taking a class later this month). - Finish glass totems I started this past weekend. - Finish glass insulator hose guides. - Divide a bunch of hostas (big job, not looking forward to it). - Work on more mosaics and garden junk as the mood strikes me.

Here's what they are, if anyone is interested. Pedilanthus macrocarpus, the other one is Euphorbia tirucalli. If you can't make the swap and want some of these pretty ladies, just let me know. Thanks for the vote of confidence everyone! Yes it was work, and more ahead. But....there is light at the end of the tunnel. The builder worked on the bay window today. There were some surprises. Once all layers were removed under the windows, we found that it was bricked up. Not very well, and the brick had to be removed as the wood sill below was rotten. Will be replacing the sill and then insulating before putting new layers (all cedar) back on. The cedar has already been primed so that there is primer between the layers. Also will be caulking all joints to help prevent moisture from getting between the layers and causing rot again in the future. However I should also mention that the support beams(?) were original and nailed with square nails and that wood was just as solid as when it was put there 140 years ago! Sure wish we could find lumber like that today. When I talked to the builder, he hopes to be ready to pour the concrete slab for the garage on Friday. We are supposed to have a warm up and get into the mid 70's on Thurs and perhaps 80 on Friday and no rain until later on Saturday. Now I only have to worry about the kids in the rental behind us marking up the slab or riding their bikes on it before it sets up. They have a regrettable tendency to ride their bikes into the neighborhood yards and go into garages with out asking, etc. Not real happy with that and very glad the house has sold and new owner moving in the 1st of June. DH said we will just have to take our chairs out there and sit and soak up the sun..... :-) Marylu

Has anyone lived in a camper while they build?

We haven't lived in a camper while we built, but we did travel for 2+ years in a motorhome while looking for a home, land and what state to live in. In retrospect, we would have gotten a large, comfortable but less expensive fifth-wheel or trailer (which sounds like what you want to do) instead of the 45 foot luxury, expensive, used motorcoach we got. We were always too afraid of messing up the custom everything to enjoy it. If you are willing to live in a smaller space for a while, do without some luxuries, and you think you'd be content and flexible, you'll be fine. It can be enjoyable and liberating to see how little you need! If you take the opportunity to, you can make it a time to really slow down, simplify, escape the tyranny of stuff and take the experience for what it is and what it offers. The mistake we made was we tried to bring all our "stuff" with us - computers, exercise machines, a library of books - and it just got in the way and made it cluttered, physically and psychologically. Some luxuries you may have to be content without: baths (most have showers only), a big, fully equipped kitchen, etc. We stayed in hotels sometimes just to take baths! How much you enjoy it is more about your mindset than anything else, I think.
