I can not think of a single nut tree that doesn't get huge. Perhaps your best bet is to stick with the fruit trees and try and find a friend you can trade with at harvest time. The one danger of nut trees is that they often replant themselves in places where you'd just as soon they didn't grow to begin with. I've got black walnuts all over this property. Getting rid of a sapling that is growing where I don't want it can be a lesson and a half in patiences and determination.

Just saw this post, so it may be a little too late. however walking down the main road in canandaigua is nice. There are many shops there to go and look into. Also the Sonnenburg mansion is nice. It is a nice place to walk around and relax. They have been fixing up their gardens there and it is getting better and better. There isn't a huge nightlife there however there may be some concerts that your neices may enjoy at the fingerlakes performing arts center. It is really nice there. Not sure if you can rent a boat on the lake however I am sure they would love that.

They are often over a central staircase and let in lots of light. Yes, they can play havoc with temp control, but if you open the windows in the summer you get a nice flow of hot air up and out of the house. Some have a glass pane between the turret and the main house, with the turret in the attic part. My house in VA had the remains of a cupola with a stained glass panel between cupola windows and the main staircase. Alas, when the house was divided into apartments in the 1920s the stained glass was removed and the staircase closed up. It must have been lovely.
