NC outer banks help?

I've never been there and am really excited about our trip, we'll see Washington D.C and then head home to FL via the outer banks of NC.

I'm worried about the travel time, it looks like those ferries could be pretty slow and the roads could be congested? Where to camp? How bad will the mosquitos be - can we camp close enough to the ocean to avoid them? We'll be in a tent and trying to meals very simple, eating out when convenient.

The children are really looking for waves to ride, is any section of the coast better for that than others?

All suggestions appreciated!

The link below has a list of NPS campgrounds with prices. I know Oregon Inlet is on the water. Not sure about the others.
If you are going to go the way of the ferrys leave early and don't be in a hurry.
I have been to OBX several times and the last visit I was by myself and decided to take the ferrys. My normal 6 hr drive turned into a 12 hr short cut.
The ride from Ocracoke to the mainland is a 2- 2 1/2 hr ride on a boat that you can't fish from. The first 15 minutes were great and then I took a nap for the remainder of the ride. Maybe I just get bored easily. I did meet some interesting people on the ferry. Not much else to do on the boats. But if you are not in a hurry it is something for the kids to talk about when they get home.

If you are new to the sea-shore, please ask about going into the water. There are hidden dangers there that can get you into trouble right quick, especially kids!
Things such as rip-tides, jelly fish, sharks, all kinds of things. Please, go to the library and read up on the sea shore, before you or your kids get in trouble there!
I don't mean to sound like the voice of doom, but others have gone into the water, and haven't come out!
I almost lost my new bride on our honeymoon! Yep, she got caught in a rip-tide, and if it hadn't been for another man who had experience with rip-tides, she'd have been gone!
so, read up on it, and be careful!

I love your question because I've been studying about gardening in Wilmington because I want to help out my MIL who lives there. I'm in Raleigh, NC, and I just happen to have a sandy loam soil in my yard, so I'm very interested in drought-tolerant plants anyway. I agree about using your local nurseries. Below are some great choices I suspect you'll see: Herbs love poor sandy soil with excellent drainage. Many are quite ornamental. Jerusalem sage is a recommended groundcover. White Jupiter's beard (Centranthus ruber, var. albus). My book also shows a pretty red Jupiter's beard. They pair it with blue catmint (Nepeta faassenii). Consider Russian sage for gray foliage and lilac plumes with deep roots and a spreading habit. It can be invasive even. Groundcovering thyme is your friend. Wonderful for holding the soil and it flowers. There are many different salvias, which are in the sage family. Some are used as an herb and others more for their ornamental value, but hummingbirds love them and there are probably plenty that would appeal to you and suit your soil. Sea thrift (Armeria maritima) is made for your situation. It is covered with pink flowers on deep green foliage. Sun rose (Helianthemum nummularium). Rock soapwort is a pink-flowering groundcover that is very cute and loves the seaside garden. Many bulbs love sandy soil and tolerate sea-side sites, including Dutch irises. Cleome is a reseeding annual that wouldn't mind your sandy soil. Not sure about salt spray. Artemisia loves good drainage of sandy soil. It is mostly about the gray foliage, but it alsogets yellow flowers. You can have daylilies, but they do appreciate amended soil. I'd just use cow manure. There are much more interesting ones than the old orange ones. There are some lovely goldenrods. Some noninvasive ones include Sweet goldenrod (Solidago odora), rough-leaf goldenrod (S. rugosa 'Fireworks', S. spacelata 'Golden Fleece,' and the hybrid cultivar 'Cloth of Gold' stays under 2 feet tall. You can grow Hibiscus. They appreciate some cow manure also. If you have some trees, if you want the look of grass, consider dwarf Mondo grass. It's a spreader, but stays nice and short, so mow or don't. There are different kinds of flox, tall or spreading, but all are tolerant of your soil. They don't mind some amendment though. Coneflowers will grow in the toughest environment. So will Rudbeckia (black-eyed Susan). Sedums are easy, easy, easy, and good drainage and sun or mostly sun is what they need. Yarrow, verbena, lantana are all tolerant. Mexican petunia might go a little crazy, but it can certainly handle your conditions. Shrubs: Shrub rose (Rosa sp). Flowering quince, euonymus, hollies. You can grow hydrangeas, but they do like amended soil with plenty of organic matter blended into the native soil. Make the hole wider than deep. Use thick mulch to keep roots cols and moist. They'll need watering to get established. If you like blue like I do, see if Endless Summer works where you are. Otherwise go with whatever works there. Spireas come in lots of choices and are tolerant. According to one of my books, the only lilac worth trying is probably Syringa X laciniata, or cut-leaf lilac requires well-drained soils that are neutral or slightly alkaline. Should do great there. It is fragrant and has pretty purple flowers, but it looks more like a large heather than a lilac in the picture I see. Chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus) needs well-drained soil and it prefers poorer soils. It is like a more easily tamed butterfly bush. The leaves are shaped like marijuana. Grancy Graybeard (Chionanthus virginicus) tolerates well-drained soil. I think we know it as fringe tree. Very pretty. Silverbell is a native white flowering tree. Smoke tree tolerates tough conditions. I'd check and see if it works close to the ocean.

Great to hear your feed back and discussion everyone. Hi Jim and T7, the sago and cyads that was yellow was just one of many. Most were doing very well from Cape Hatterus on down. Some of the really healthy ones were planted along houses, but must be living well because they were everywhere, except I do not remember too many on the upper NC banks. There were tons of trackys doing well all over. Pindos butias and cabbages were doing better on the upper NC banks than the southern hatterus ones because of the wind. Jim, that butia was at a gas station at hatterus in a windy spot for sure. It was very windy way out there and when people plant these among their yards the large palms did well - but in open parking lots they were not so full. That indicated to me we were right on the margin of survival(no protection). VB is not native for cabbages but they can survive well in yards as Laura VB showed us. Thanks for identifying the agave and here's some good info as well. They seemed only to survive in buxton which is around hatterus. there was an huge agave at a firehouse and it had many babies around it looking like it had been there years. But just north of there, is where cabbages did better because of less wind, there were NO agaves north of buxton. Guess what I took some pics of my palms here in brooklyn.

The vacation rental business in OBX is pretty busy. I was typing on my phone and really just went for brevity. I should have been more clear. I have a place on Longboat Key, which is the market I was looking at, and while that is certainly a different market, the business isn't actually that different. I never said that the rental business isn't thriving, I just said that the idea of someone wanting it for rentals is a bit meh. There are really three kinds of people in the vacation rental business. (1) Those who want a vacation property, but only want to use it part of the year, (2) those who wanted to sell it but couldn't get their asking price, and (3) the pros (which is closer to what I would be). The problem with small separate units is that it is only a great opportunity for the pros. People who want a family vacation home don't want separate one bedroom houses, and so you are going to have a tough time marketing to that group. The pros, are all about buying cheap. Someone who is actually in the rental business would salivate over this property, but not because of all the income it will generate, but because it screams all cash deal and those who regularly do all cash deals tend not to overpay. My rental profit is made the day I buy a house. I know what rent is going to be, I know what occupancy rate is going to look like, so the only variable is what I am spending on the house. I don't know that I have ever bought a rental property that was marketed to the general public, either it was put up for investors or it never hit the market. I would guess the real estate investors in OBX are looking for a 12% ROI. So I just don't see them lining up with their checkbooks to buy this property for top dollar. So I would be cautious building a property that you hope someone interested in owning a rental will purchase. It isn't that they won't, it is just that as a group real estate investors tend not to pay as much. ETA: Yes these are generalizations, but that is what you use for trying to look at a future resale value.

Thanks Bob and Rusty,

I'm really torn between the comforts of the Rodanthe KOA and the atmosphere of Okrakoke. I guess we might try a couple nights in each.

I appreciate the warnings, I know there are often hazardous conditions on those beaches. My kids are strong swimmers and I've been teaching them about rip currents. We have some experience with east coast beaches (Hunting Island, SC) but I don't think we're over-confident. I have to remember to carry the vinegar or amonia or whatever one applies for jelly stings.

When my wife got caught in that rip-tide, i couldn't go to help her!
I had lost my left foot in WW II! Being with that problem, if i had taken off my artificial leg, i would of had to crawl to the water! (Like a large turtle)If i had left it on, and gone into the water, the VA would have had my neck in a noose! And, i'd have probably needed rescuing, too, at that point!
Later on, on a canoeing trip. i had decided, if i had to push the canoe when it got stuck on the bottom, i'd keep the left foot in the canoe, and the good foot in the water! Well, in the excitement of getting stuck, somebody hollered to me that i had gotten mixed up, and had the wrong foot in the water! Four hours in front of the camp-fire got it dried out, but it had to be replaced later on!
Never was the same after that! (The foot-not me!)

Ok, we're home and glad of it. Now I remember why we don't like to camp in the summer - too hot and crowded. The tent sites at Ocean Waves campground near Oregon Inlet were very nice, but the neighbors in nearby (as in, nearly on top of) rental homes were loud late into the night and many folks were shooting off fireworks every evening so the beach was littered with garbage. The water was very cold for us Floridians.

Down on Okracoke we enjoyed the NPS campground, cold showers and all, but the bugs are pretty bad. The water was several degrees warmer and waves break more gradually there - interesting to see how different the beach is because of the angle to the ocean. The weather turned bad so we only stayed one night and then took the long ferry south. Fun enough, but somehow we ended up watching People's Court on TV so that was weird - next time we'd have to do a better job of planning activities.

I'm glad we saw it, but it isn't on our "must visit again" list. We are much closer to South Carolina beaches which are more accessible, with better facilities and better beaches. But we'll wait till early Autumn to do any more trips.

The fall (October) is my very favorite time of the year for the beaches in North & South Carolina; also April and eary May are nice, too - but bring "Skin-So-Soft" for the gnats & no-see-ums!

The summer-time crowd is noisy and the hot weather puts a crimp on the sleeping pleasures on being next to the surf.
