Tufted Titmouse question

I had a Tufted Titmouse visit me this morning. He/She was going back and forth from the seed feeder. I have never had one visit me in summer. Was wondering if this could be a new born? Are the new ones out and about yet? I live in SE Michigan. Any ideas on how I can keep this little guy around? thanks---ED

He/she may have been feeding younsters. I had one a week or so ago going back and forth to the feeder. When I watched where he/she went it was to a tree with 3 little ones there that she was feeding. If that is what it is you should be seeing the little ones going to the feeder with the parent soon. The ones I have seem to be attracted to sunflower seeds, suet and shelled peanuts (seem to be the favorite).

Since Titmice don't migrate, if you've seen them before then they were probably living close to you. If it is feeding it's young, it is taking them around and showing them where to find food. Now, they will know about your feeders, too. You may have a new group of resident birds. Yippee! :)

We find that lots of birds love the peanut suet. There aren't any seeds in it (they can get those at the other feeders) and they gobble it up. The catbirds, cardinals, mockingbirds, woodpeckers (red bellied and downy), nuthatches, titmice/mouses, and chickadees come to it a lot. We often see hummers feeding at the flowers in our gardens, but not much at the feeder so far. They usually eat from the feeder more in late summer and early fall when they're fattening up to head across the Gulf. (How do dey do dat???)

Thanks all. Definitely something strange about a bird not shaking off some of that water. Plus, having seen it in that condition so many times. She does fly off just fine, so hopefully all is well. Am waiting for the pair to bring their fledglings to the feeder!

Suet, berries, sunflowers - black oil, Malindas bluebird mix. And yes they are still in Michigan year round. At least here at my house by the woodlands! Regulars to my peanut butter/corn meal / dried fruit mix: bluejays, woodpeckers, titmice, nuthatches, chickadees and occasionally when I hang a deer ribcage after processing for my meat I get the pileateds in.

Congratulations on seeing your first TUTI hawkeye. It is so exciting to spot a bird you have never seen before. I'm curious what area you are from because around here (MA) we have bucket loads of TUTIs. They are such beautiful and fun birds to have around. They absolutely love mealworms. If you put those out, they'll bring their friends.

Hey Eddie! TUTIs are here year round, they are just much noisier now with all the babies out.

It was just the lone one yesterday----That is why I thought maybe it was a new one out on his/her own. Have not heard or seen the lone TM today. Yesterday eve I actually put out the raw peanut feeder in the hope of keeping him here. The Hosp like it-^%$@#&^%$(&*^()*&(*&-----------ED

This precious bird is one of my favorites and I love watching the 4 or 5 who frequent my yard and feeders all year long. They'll often hop around my patio and breezeway looking for a few spilled seeds...probably letting me know that the feeders are empty! They will pick out the shelled peanuts from the feeders, and like the dees, will grab one and fly off to a branch, but I've never seen them on my suet feeders.

Hope they stick around as they are such a joy.

Tufted Titmice love black oil sunflower seeds. On my Roy's Pond video, I have some extreme close-up footage of one holding a sunflower seed under it's feet. Two pecks and the seed opened right up.

I read that Tufted Titmice are territorial in breeding season, and they keep others out of a 1 to 2 acre area. I have many more in the winter, but have a pair that visit my feeders in summer, also. Enjoy them, they are one of my favorite to watch!

I visited my father last week in NJ and many of the birds had little fledglings following them around and begging for food. A baby titmouse kept landing on the window ledge and peeping at me. Very cute.
