How is every one Big Zac Tomatoes doing? How do they taste? Tylenol sent me some seed and I planted two Big Zac they are about fourteen inches tall they are starting to bloom. How do the tomtoes taste from the seed saved and planted from Big Zac?

I've grown them many years. I think they taste great and are extremely productive for such a large fruiting variety.

If you live beside Minnie Zaccarie get out your spotting scope and watch the most successful tomato grower in recent times. No one has touched her....not even close. She is a grand ole lady and in my opinion the best grower of all times to date. I grow Big Zac every year. I get some dandies but never in her league. Incidently the seed saved produce about 75% Big Zac and all the other crosses as expected. You can see the vigor of Big Zac in the early growth of seedlings. If pennies are important planting saved seed with careful observation is not all to great a risk.

Actually from the feedback I've seen at the message sites where I read/post for many years is that most folks get Big Zac F1's, at most, in the 2-3 lb range. When folks have asked for varieties that can equal that and even get bigger I've usually suggested: Omar's Lebanese ( seeds originally to me from Omar Sahib) Cuostralee Zogola Red Barn ......just to name a few. And I know others could name some as well. No megabloom stuff, just single fruits as normally grown. Folks who grow for competitive reasons usually take off most blossoms and small fruits, but I don't think I've seen anyone who prunes foliage to get larger sized fruits. After all, the more foliage, the more photosynthesis, the more energy obtained for ripening fruits and synthesizing the many organic compounds that determine taste. The 2008 Totally Tomatoes Catalog says that Big Zac is their exclusive. It kind of stretches the truth **** In one way yes, in another way no. The following companies were originally owned by Wayne Hiltom, which he started: TT Shumways ( bought the name rights to Shumway) Seymour's Seeds Vermont Bean Co ( a takeover; he didn't start this one) HPS The original agreement between Minnie Zaccariha ( sp?) was with Hilton and TT re Big Zac F1 seeds when she provided the parents. Jung Seeds bought the above companies from Hilton quite a few years ago now. When Hilton owned the companies Big Zac was only offered by TT, not Shumway and not Vt Bean, etc. That's my recollection. And in past ywars I don't remember Shumway offering BZ, even after the sale to Jung's. So the exclusive was initially just with TT but since the same Co, Jung's. owns all of the above companies and many varieties that are the same are offered in TT, Shumway and Vt Bean, it's still all the same Co with the same seeds. I grew Big Zac years ago and was not impressed with the flavor, although the size is impressive.

I never saved BZ seed. But like I said I think they taste great. I understand (from people who have reported here in the past) that if you save seed they breed very close to the real deal. Seed are available comercially so I don't bother saving them.

No, Big Zac is a hybrid.

They are definitely a hybrid. So you need original seeds to grow the real deal. I am not interested in growing saved seeds either.

I intend to grow them next year since I like big toms. I bought an extra pack of seeds. If anyone wants a pack give me an email. I am frustrated with the seed vendor since they never have seeds in stock. So I finally got some a week ago. this way I will have them all set to go.

My advice is not to wait on these seeds. If you want them then just get some and be ready. I have planted tom seeds 15 years old with almost 100% germination.

Big Zac has fantastic beefsteak flavor, and a beautiful, round, crack-free shape for such a huge tomato. Last year, my 1 plant yielded 30.7 #, with 10 over 1.5#, 4 which were over 2#. It's one of my top 10 favorite tomatoes.

Thats a great harvest barkeater. I'll be growing Big Zac this fall. It's currently at the seedling stage.
