Where are you camping this year?

First camping trip of the year this weekend, to St Joseph Peninsula state park in Port St Joe, FL. Still to cold for me to swim in the gulf, but can't wait to visit the beach & unplug, break out our new tent, spend some time with friends, grill some delicious food.

Where are you going? What do you do there?

Guess i'll be camping at "Porch view!" Wife can't leave the house for any trips. Her cigs did that for us. Needs her oxygen tank all of the time! Car is old, and camper is older, and i'm lots older than most everything i own!
No regrets-we have travelled the whole eastern side of the USA. Saw a lot, did a lot, visited friends and relatives, etc. Even made it to Texas once! Visited friends there. Went in a 1962 Chevy station wagon and towed a small tent trailer. Bought the car second hand and the trailer new.
Bought a rolled over 78 Ford Country Squire wagon, fixed it up, and towed the Nimrod tent trailer all over with it, then used it to tow our 18 ft. travel trailer.
OHH, yes, i was kept busy fixing up tow cars for our trips, and all.
Then we bought a Class C Motor home, and put lots of miles on it. Still have it-can't sell it, with gas costing so much and it gets 10 MPG! Down hill! Still runs and all, but, with wife sick, i can't just run off for weekends! So, I am camping at Porch View, PA.!

Well we did have a blast camping last month. It wasn't too cold for swimming in the gulf afterall. Nice! We took a canoe and put it in on the bay side but couldn't see as much in the water as we had hoped because the wind was rippling up the water.

One interesting thing that happened was a raccoon ripping a hole in our new tent in the middle of the night to steal cookies, muffins & bread. Caught him sitting in a pile of muffin wrappers!

Nothin' better than camping at a good Bluegrass Festival, I'll be camping at the Huck Finn Festival in California next month, can't wait. A couple of friends that play a little music will be coming along as well. Second trip of the season, did a short one out to the desert last month. That was a wild trip! I usually a get a NOAA weather forcast before leaving and it was calling for wind 15-25 mph for the first day then calmer over the next few days. The first night it blew 45 with gusts to 70 that flatten my daughter's nylon tent and blew the door out. I've been in some crazy weather with my wall tent but I think this was real close to the limit. Anyway we had to put the camping on hold while the tent is getting a couple of holes that chaffed through repaired. Hope it gets back in time for that festival.

I'm bad for driving off and leaving little battery operated radios. The first was a most excellent (but inexpensive), clear as a bell, weather radio. Don't remember the brand, or for that matter exactly were it was purchased; only that I have never been able to find a replacement just like it. As I recall the incident, was maybe 100 miles down the road when I "remembered"! The other was a small hand held AM/FM radio, not a whole lot taller than a pack of cigarettes and maybe about a thick and wide. I had bought it from Radio Shack and it was on sale; remember the clerk had said what a great reception and tone it had for such a small radio ... and it did! We had been camped right next to a river where we had been fishing and that particular morning we were going to break camp and move on over to another river maybe 50 miles away; and I was whipping up some breakfast at the picnic table, while listening to the morning news with that little radio. Had it sitting in a crook of a tree right close by. I remember it was tuned to a PBS station and after the news & weather, some classical music came on that I liked. So what I did was have breakfast, wash the dishes, break camp - which meant closing up the popup camper, all the while the little radio played on in the crook of that tree; and hitched-up the camper and driving off, too! The next morning, at the new camp site, I was wondering where I put the radio. It really did'nt come to me what I had done until in the middle of the following night when I suddenly awoke to remember the last where-abouts of that radio! Now, I've went back to Radio Shack to find a replacement, but that one was on a close-out sale and the newer replacement model was almost three times as much and the same clerk said it was'nt as good! maggiepatty, I'm in the minority here it looks like and I'm probably about as "normal" as you can get, and I am in the same camp as your DH. I think 3rd grade (and 5th grade) is way to too young to send off for a month(s) at a time. Of course, no one I know does that, so that would be a very "abnormal" thing around here. I have a 5th grader, who went to summer camp for the first time last summer (with a number of his friends) for a week and that was plenty long enough. My DS is very athletic and outgoing and has lots of friends and he did enjoy camp, but he was ready to come home. This year we are sending him to a single sport camp for only 4 days in another state. Is it mostly people who work who send their kids off for month(s) at a time during the summer? I guess I can kind of see that since the parents won't be there during the day anyway-and their kids may be more used to it? I don't know, what is it because I cannot wrap my head around it. I'm really just asking. Kids get so little time anyway to spend at "home" with some "down time" with school and all extra-curricular activities during school, so summer to us is about vacations, having DS friends over swimming, bike riding to each other's houses and to the tennis courts, playing basketball outside, golfing, etc. How do you fit a months worth of camp in the summer after all that? My parents sent us to church camp for a week each summer and I went to cheerleading camp every summer starting at 7th grade. I can see when they are around 8th grade being gone for a month-but even your 5th grader I would start off a week at the most two weeks for the first time.

Sorry about your tent, Purple, hope you were able to repair it.

My DH and I are embarking soon on a big x-country camping trip. Maine to California, up the coast to Washington, then back east via Glacier. We've downsized our usual tent to a 4 person dome, and we'll be camping out of our small hatchback.

I've done lots of camping in Maine and am happy to share suggestions if anyone is planning on some Maine camping.

this year both trips are on Lake Huron
In July we were at Pinery (pic below)
In Aug we go to Inverhuron.

I have to say that after 10years of trying to book Pinery I managed to book there this year. ANd it is just amazing and wonderful.

I'm definitely going to Zions National Park. This park is located in southern Utah and it is beautiful! The park consists of alot of "red rock" and areas where you can hike, climb, and go mountain biking. I try to do all three of these things when I go but mountain biking is my favorite. They have a lot of really amazing trails throughout the park area.

Due to issues that would be boring to discuss, we didn't camp any more last year, but are kicking around the idea of when we should do a camping weekend this year. And no, we didn't repair the tent yet, sad. It's still just packed from last April. It's just so hot here when school's out for summer...!

Regardless, reading about the VASTLY different places people can go and things they can experience because of camping is awesome!

Any post-trip reports on these trips mentioned above?

It has been a real unseasonably "cool" springtime in this neck of the woods. Years past I would have been in the mountains around early April trying to catch trout but they even had snow about that time this year. Now early May and it's still cold & wet. Last year at this time it was early summer!

Until it's warmer, for this old man anyway, I'm going to piddle around the house; and when the weather is such that it will cause a sweat to come out on the brow, then the camp & fish gear will come out!

Late July, my son and I will be camping near Bethel, NY, the home of my ultimate camping experience 44 years ago. Boy did it rain that weekend.

DH and I went to SW Minnesota during the last week of May. For the first part of the trip we stayed in a camper cabin at Lake Swetek. We loved it. A beautiful, well kept, and very quiet, State Park. We're surprised that no one we have talked to has ever even heard of the park. During the second part of the trip we stayed in a real tipi (teepee) at Blue Mound State Park in Luverne, MN.

In August we are headed to the Apostle Islands in northern Wisconsin. We welcome any suggestions for that trip. We will probably we tenting.

Eventually we hope to buy a travel trailer, 5th wheel, or Class C.

Apple Valley Orchard & RV Park in Kelowna, BC. Love the fruit in season! Apples, cherries, peaches, apricots and grapes.

If you don't keep your food in sealed animal proof containers, even shut up in the car or tied up in a tree, you could have more problems that disappearing food. Bears do more than just rip a hole in your tent.

2014 back to the "Beaten Path" in the Absaroka Wilderness, northeast of Yellowstone National Park, this time with a fishing rod in hand. I assisted taking a group of scouts last year there. This time it will be an adult-only fishing trip.

If you have the skills to backpack, this is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Can't hike? Take the car can ride from Red Lodge, Montana to Cooke City, Montana, a breath taking trip up over 10,000 feet. Best time is mid July to mid august. Dine in Red Lodge, really nice town! Be sure you have good brakes, some parts of drive not for the faint-hearted. Be sure to stop at the Top-of-the-World store along the way.

If you hike it, start on Cooke City side at about 7500 feet, up over top at about 9900 feet, then down to 6000 feet at East Rosebud, about 26 miles. 2 really long days for super athletes or minimalist light weight hikers or a nice 3 to 4 day trip for the average Joe. Abundant water and nice lakes to camp by such as Russell Lake, Ouzel Lake, Twin Outlets Lake, and Rainbow Lake. Huge waterfalls thundering through many sections of the trail on the north end. 200 folks in the area on an average summer day, spread out over miles of wilderness but lots of side lakes/trails if you want to explore without others nearby. Camping at trail heads is $20 a car per night, parking free at trail heads, and camping is free in the wilderness. Some special camping rules apply, mainly distance from water sources, but very manageable.
