Quick update- I have spent all day/night (literally for the past 13 hrs and it is now almost 1am) fretting over the possible death of my guys; reading and reading and becoming more and more confused between the various websites' info. One thing that has not confused me is the confidence everyone on THIS site has in Al's GM [Al, how r u not mass producing this already?! ;-) ] The current status of my guys are that they r not sitting in water but have received 2 very hot and steamy treatments in my bathroom over the course of the night- i am hoping this will mAke due by supplying SOME semblance of water w/o drowning them.... one website I read mentioned letting the roots dry out??? Again- lil Miss Confused over here :-/ All is (hopefully) not lost bc thru my trusty google search and Turface's website, I've located a dealer who is less than 5 miles from me! :-D I'm emailing the unsuspecting manager tomorrow and hopefully will be able to move forward w/ what seems to be one of the hardest of the materials to find. *fingers crossed* I will admit that altho I have pics, I am simply too embarrassed to post them :( and also have further confused myself by reading mentions of the 5:1:1 mix but out of pure exhaustion have not fully read up on-yet. It sounds like Al's GM works for all of my guys including all of the succulents I have managed to NOT kill (yaaaay me!). From the fellow forum members' posts, sounds like I can find the proper bark and granite supplies at my local Home Depot. Al - I know you are out there somewhere and I thank you for sharing this knowledge with the rest of us newbies!!! Will post again RE: the process!

It depends on how old they are. If they are under 3 weeks you should have a heat lamp on them. Do not let them get in deep water because if they are not old enough they can drown or catch a bad chill and get sick. Feed them UNMEDICATED chick or duck start food. Medicated will kill them. You cannot tell if they are male or female until they have all of their feathers. Do not let them chew on bolts or screw or any knid of hardware because it can kill them. That's all you really need to know. It sounds expensive and like alot but it's really not. I am only 14 and recently bought 4 ducks.

If you see a lot of water pooling where the seedlings are, you can expect high attrition, though usually not 100% unless its sustained bad flooding for several days. You'll know the full damage in a week or so. If there is damage, the newest seedlings will be the worst hit, but they often surprise you and recover a few days later. Plants that have well-established true leaves will tend to survive better. After the rains stop, you may want to check and see if some of your seedlings are buried under soil that got tossed around by water. If they are, try to VERY CAREFULLY expose them, while keeping their root portions covered by soil. If you just see some accumulated splashed earth on their leaves, leave it for a bit and hose it off later once the ground has dried out some. We all had this experience about 3 years back when we had some REALLY hard rains in LA. It took out a lot of seeding plants in February, even in raised beds with "pretty good" drainage. Anyhow, your raised beds should be fairly resistant -- this is one of the reasons you make them. That being said -- if you are seeing ANY sign of pooling water that is lasting more than an hour or so, and you have an easy way to keep water off the beds, go for it. Worst case though -- can just replant. You aren't going to lose that much harvest or time at this point, and if you are super concerned, you can always just order some seedlings to make up the lost time either directly at the store or via mail from a nursery. It's normal for them to drop their leaves when moved inside. Just an adjustment to less light, drier atmosphere. If they are in a sunny window, they should leaf out again shortly. Keep an eye out for spider mite and don't let them dry out. Minis are not easy house plants because they require a lot of light and are prone to spider mite. A good idea to take them to the kitchen sink at least once a week and spray the underside of the leaves with cold water. I put a paper towel over the top of the dirt and invert the pot so as to be able to drench the under side of the plant. Also keep an eye out for aphids which can be controlled with soapy water. Indoors black spot and such are usually not a problem. If they get enough sun, you should get new buds and blooms, especially after the days start getting longer.
