Sometimes those yelping sounds from the trees are very difficult to identify without seeing who's making them. Could be a fox, a fisher, or something else. Do you have a good pair of binoculars? It's the only way I've been able to make a positive ID.

I'm also hearing what I think are turkeys yelping, which surprises me. This has been an unusual turkey year; there was a dramatic breeding season early on, then it turned very cold and I've only seen one poult, and that one not lately.

Some turkeys are definitely here foraging under my feeders, although not in great numbers. I wonder if the nesting season was lost due to the cold and/or fisher cats. Maybe there's a sporadic attempt to restart the mating process, hence the yelping.

This only happens early in the morning. We don't have fishers here in SW Missouri, do have foxes but I don't THINK that's what I'm hearing. I think I'll go to the woods in the morning with the binoculars and try to pinpoint the source of the sound. Tho I have never seen turkeys here in this woods, conditions are right. I should be able to find some feathers, if that is what the sound is, since they would be moulting with the triple digit heat.

Could be foxes, I suppose, if so there are multiples of them as the yelping comes from at least 3 different directions, as if they are answering each other.

The turkeys here sound off during the day time, so maybe that's not it.

No, no coyotes, and I listened to the fox sounds, not foxes. I also listened to turkey sounds, and that is it, definitely the yelping sound. But just early in the morning, when they should be waking up. My husband was walking this morning about 7 and he heard them, said it sounded like they were in the woods along the interstate (about 2 blocks away). There is a wide mowed strip and a pretty dense woods between here and there, so they could be anywhere. I went walking out there about dusk thinking maybe I could find where they are roosting, but didn't see anything. I don't hear them any other time of the day, and I am outside a lot. I think I'll try to be out there sitting quietly some morning at dawn this week to see if I can find them.

It could be a Mockingbirds, Parakeet or Guineas, which seem similar to gobble, clucks and yelps. It could also be woodpecker that is mostly brown in color and larger in size.

There are no guineas near here, and anyway I know what they sound like; not them. Not mockers, and we have no parakeets. Not woodpeckers, either. Or owls, or doves. Definitely turkeys. I'm going out in the early morning with a turkey call that my son in law loaned me and see if I can get them to come in close enough to see, just to satisfy my curiosity.
