My Old Dog Molly

My old black lab, Molly, turns 16 today! This is especially old for a lab, my vet says they are usually done in between 12 and 14 years old. A lot of the kids around here grew up with her and who are now off to college or starting their own families. She always had a real sweet disposition, not a mean hair on her. Lousy watch dog; she loves everybody. Since I've had her, you could steal anything I had (including her), providing you tossed her a ball or a stick a couple of times!

She's getting a little slow getting around these days.

How wonderful that you still have Molly. I hope she hangs around for a good while yet.

We had a black lab, Missy, that we lost when she was 15. She got sick on a weekend but we didn't realize it was serious. We took her to the vet on Mon morn and she had a uterine infection. They kept her to give her IV and she died during the night. We wonder if she thougth she was abandoned and died from heartbreak. When you have one for so long it is like tearing your heart out to lose them. We have a 7 year old golden retriever now and she is a great camper.

When you mentioned goosebumps the first thing that came to my mind was dropsy. I've never had any experience with it in any fish outside of bettas and goldfish, but I've supplied a link outlining the characteristics and treatment. You mention double aeration...what type of filter set up do you have? Most of the time a healthy fish has a strong enough immune system to keep common aquarium diseases in check. How often are you doing water changes and have you had the water tested? While in most cases people say to buy your own test kit, if you aren't planning on expanding your tanks much further I'd say just take a water sample into any chain pet store. Unless they are your only option for buying fish I wouldn't recommend them for purchasing anything other than supplies or possibly plants, BUT most of the time they are willing to do a simple ammonia-nitrite-nitrate strip test for you. The PetCo near me even has staff that is fairly intelligent about the fish they supply...inquiring about your tank size and current inhabitants etc. Good luck with your fish, and depending on your other fish in the tank and whether or not you have sensitive plants, definitely consider the salt treatment; mollies are known to thrive in brackish water. For a bit of claification, marking and potty training are two different thing - behaviorally speaking. our dog feels his is the alpha male or boss of your household, and his marking anything new means he is claiming that thing. To stop your dog from marking is going to take a bit of work. First while your dog is in the house, he needs to be under control. This means to either leash him to you while you are going about your business or blocking him from the area where the carpet is. Given the opportunity, your dog WILL mark the carpet and anything new in his domain, including people. So, you need to change his idea of where he is in the heirarchy of your household. To do this you need to change his potty habits since they are directly related to the problem you are experiencing. First you need to stop letting your dog tell you when he needs to go, and stop just letting him outside to do his business. He needs structure, going on on a leash with a choke collar everyday 3 times a day at the same time for at least 20 minutes a walk. The walk needs to have him not sniffing at every and marking at every blade of grass. When I take a dog like this out, I give him 3 to 5 minutes before I start the walk to sniff, pee and poo, then we walk. The dog walks at my side and we walk at a pretty good clip. The dog gets to pee when I pick the place, not the dog. Just before Im finished with the walk, the dog has another opportunity to do his business. When the dog is in the act of going, he gets a command to do whichever business I need him to do and gets rewarded for doing it by my praising him. I make a big deal about it. Like if the dog found a bag with 100 dollars bills filling it. This way my dog can pee or poo on command and knows that is what we are there for. There is nothing mean about this, it is absolutely the correct thing to do in order to get a handle on your dogs behavior. Let me tell you up front your dog WILL RESIST this training and may throw a tantrum or two each time you take him out. It is common to expect your dog to put the brakes on and not want to walk at all. or to try and pull you to where he wants to go etc. Until you get a handle on his behavior you can use a number of tricks to help keep your dogs marking under more control. You can use a spray dog repellant on or near the carpet - Spray a towel then put the towel down near the carpet on another dry towel, you can use one of those office floor mats which go under an office chair to protect the floor, only place it with the plastic nubs normall stuck in the carpet facing upwards which will make walking on it unpleasant for your dog. The very last thing I recommend is a belly band, which I do NOT recommend for long time or permanent use. Good luck

SG, Thank you so much for your insight--I believe you are a true "dog whisperer"! Let me clarify a few things and ask specific training & environmental questions: First I'll say, due to you and Annz' kind help, I believe I have corrected one of my problems. When I designed our new home I made space under the wall cabinets in the laundry rm for the dogs' kennels--next to each other. I thgt I was so smart doing this, but for my dogs' personalities, this may be one big problem. So hours ago, I moved Tiger's kennel to a different room (pantry next to L. rm) and he went right in! So now they will have their own space--away from each other. ~~I am also not going to allow either to sit under my desk while I am working--maybe that made Pepper (the Wheaton) think Tiger was getting special treatment (?). #2: The dogs do know I am TOP DOG for I, also, use their food & bowls to show my dominance--pretend to eat a kernel from their bowls before putting bowl down--pick up while they are eating & touch them/their food while they are eating. Never a problem--never a growl or resistance. Also, when we pass thru a door outside I am to go first, after I have them sit-stay & wait for me. I have them sit/lay/stay on command from time to time during the day to reinforce this too. ~~A trainer I consulted after the first attack told me that they both knew I was top dog but I did things to allow Pepper to think she was my equal--that we were BOTH top dogs. So I've been doing these things for a long time---more strictly for about a yr--but now you'll see NOT STRICTLY ENOUGH. ***Let me be specific in my info and question: When I open a door to let them out, Pepper does bolt out the door ahead of me about 1/3 of the time. I use my correction sound (Ehhhhh) and she immediately returns to my side to sit/stay until I give her the "OK" to move. (Sometimes just hearing the correction sound from me, she stops & returns to my side.) Specifically, WHEN I say sit/stay--she ALWAYS obeys. If I give NO command, she will start thru the door. ~~~Writing this out, I see I'm slacking and creating top dog DOUBT in her mind. So she isn't totally convinced that I am top dog? Or am I teaching her that I AM top dog but if she "assumes a top dog behavior" there is no real consequence besides "re-doing the situation" and moving on? SO, I need to go back to square one and take better control--using a lead to control, give commands EVERY TIME AND be persistent. But is it as "simple" as that? I can & will do these things correctly now but what else am I doing or what else can I do. Surely my "allowing" her to even consider disobeying my top-dog status isn't the only reason she's "comfortable" risking punishment in order to attack Tiger? I believe Tiger knows Pepper is Alpha dog and is comfortable with it. It has to be ME & my behavior that affects Peppers attacks. Hi DHS, Has Kennedy always done this, or did she initially accept the situation and calmly get along with Little Bit? If she has always done it, has something changed to make you more concerned lately? What is different? If it is new behavior, what changed around the same time as Kennedy's behavior? Think about all of these things. Think about exactly what Kennedy does, how she does it, what she looks at, when does she start the behavior, what stops it, and if there are changes in the environment that make her attacks better or worse. Write all these things out, keep notes. Have everybody in the family write what they see during these attacks. Don't say things like "Kennedy got jealous and attacked Little Bits when she was sleeping on the couch." Since we cannot know what is going on inside her, saying she is "jealous" or "scared" or "dominant" does not help. Instead, say, "I opened the door and came in from the garage and as soon as Kennedy saw me, she jumped up. She ran in circles barking for about thirty seconds. I could tell she was excited because the hairs on the back of her neck stood up and she was bouncing up and down on her front legs, which she held stiff. She darted toward me once, then ran to where Little Bits was sleeping next to the arm of the couch and jumped on the couch and grabbed Little Bits my the scruff of her neck with her teeth and shook her a bit. Little Bits squealed and yipped, so I knew she was scared." See, describe behaviors. Then the behaviorist can use her own observations and info you have gathered to give you the best advice.

Dale, that's amazing that your dog is living such a long life! Even better that she is still healthy! As you all know, I lost my camping buddy, Katie, after 14 years this past September. I still miss her so much! Enjoy your time with your Molly!

Happy Birthday to a sweet ol' girl. We lost our Molly 1 1/2 years ago. She was our fishing dog. Loved the boat, hated hunting. Our joke was that she would find our fish for us. She slept at the front of the bassboat from the time she was 7 wks old, up until our last vacation with her at just over 15 yrs. She was a yellow. We lost her best buddy, "Goose" my husband's hunting partner this last summer. He was pushing 14. Now we have Jack....15 months and he's already had his first camping, fishing and hunting seasons under his belt. Hopefully, we will have as many years with him as we did with the last two. We sure miss them though. Give Molly an extra hug from us for her birthday and enjoy every day with her.

Thanks for all the kind words & wishes for my best friend. Molly has certainly been near & dear and I hate the thought of parting company, she has been such a good dog.

For what it's worth, a couple of things I'd like to pass on: first, the vet had me start giving Molly a baby asprin a day to kind of help her with the morning stiffness (we are both on them!) - also, on another fly fishing fourm I watch, someone there put me onto giving Molly a people dose of glucosmine every day (and we are both on that, too!) - anyway, I really believe it's helped the old girl out.

Happy Birthday to Molly. I Know how much you love her. We give our dog glucosimine too, she was put on rymadil when she got lyme last spring, but the glucosimine works so much better for her. We know a lot of people that use that instead of the rymadil with better results. We give her the chewable orange flavored ones. She loves them.
Our beloved girls left us at the ages of 12 and 14, and it was so heart breaking. I love my new girl, but it isn't the same.

Dale, I'm so glad you still have your Molly. You've evidently taken very good care of her!

Pets mean so much to us dont' they? They love us unconditionally, give us companionship, relieve our stress, make us laugh, and yes, they make us cry when they leave us. But, the bottom line is that they enrich our lives so much by their very presence.

Give her a kiss for me, if you are one who does just a thing. I kiss my cats on the head!

Dale, it is so nice you have what I call your best friend still with you. I have an almost four year old lab/rotty who is my best buddy. She has gone on day hikes with me. This year I am taking her on backbacking trips with me. She will carry her own backpack. I hope I have Megan with me as long as you have had Molly.
