Camping on Maui or Hawaii?

Hello. I was wondering if anyone out there has had experience camping on either Maui or Hawaii? My DH and I are going to Oahu in March to visit friends and want to go to another island for 4 or 5 days but would like to camp. We honeymooned on Kauai about 6 years ago and had a great time camping, especially on the beaches away from the touristy areas (in state and county parks that allowed camping).

But, we have friends that said they didn't have a lot of success camping on either Hawaii or Oahu. They said they felt like it was unsafe or unpleasant (and they are experienced campers like us). I have done a bit of online research, and have found lists of parks that allow camping, but it is hard to tell from these web sites if the experience would be a good one or not, or which sites would be the best bets.

Any thoughts? Also, any thoughts on which island to go to (Maui or Hawaii)?

Bella, IMHO, either island will be a pleasant experience. As long as you're coming from a US state en route, you are blessed by our forefathers with the 2nd Amendment. A proper firearm in either your daypack, tent, or car lockbox will go a long way in ensuring good neighbors and happy camping. Our experiences in Oahu are not unlike those others on this thread, the homeless are suspiciously welcommed in Hawa'ii, but they seem to stay to themselves and not raise much of a racket (compared to our SoCal tweakers, got bless 'em!) but we sleep a lot better with the P4 between us!

Different varieties perform differently in different climates, and some need colder winters than you have to do well. I think your best bet is to follow the recommendations of other rose growers who live in Hawai'i. The climbers suggested by the Honolulu Rose Society (www.honolulurosesociety.org) are: Aloha - Medium Pink Casino - Light Yellow Chrysler Imperial, Cl. - Red Crimson Glory, Cl. - Red Don Juan - Dark Red Dream Weaver - Orange-Pink Iceberg, Cl. - White Lace Cascade - White Rosarium Uetersen - Deep Pink Royal Sunset - Apricot Blend Snowbird - White Sombreuil - White Souv. de la Malmaison, Cl. - Pink You can find descriptions and photos of each on HelpMeFind.com (I see no "Maui Rose" listed there, so this may be a local nickname for some popular variety.) Fish emulsion is good for soil fertility, but I'd suggest you apply a balanced fertilizer meant for roses to encourage more blooms. In mid-June on this Forum, I babbled gushingly about our stay at the Four-Seasons resort in Wailea! We stayed 5 nights in early June this year. * DD had just graduated HS (only child!!), so we wanted to do something real special. * It ain't exactly cheap, $400 to well into "4-figures..."/nite, but I'll NEVER forget it.... * Four our 25th anniv. (couple yrs. away), we're going back, come hell or high water. * There's lots of complementary adult & kids activities, stunning spa areas, , kiddie-pool, gorgeous beach, etc..... * They just opened up a new adults-only pool in July I think. It was still in-progress during our stay. * Auntjen (a frequent poster here) clued me into Tripadvisor.com to search for reviews. FANTASTIC site for traveler info. * I sent back a guest-comment card in July, and just got a personally-signed letter from Maria Jagla, the Resort Manager, thanking me for my input praising various employees, etc. * She wrote..."me ke aloha pumehana a hui hou"...our warmest aloha until we meet again for your 25th anniv. in 2012! * A "teaser-pic" of the pool area! * Tori Spelling swam 5' in front of me one morning!!! * It's pretty cool gettin' spritzed with Evian water every hour!
