Extreme Newbie- Any suggestions?

I live in North Texas and my family and I have started spending a lot more time outdoors- hiking, canoeing, and dabling in the camping scene. I have always had a bird interest since I was a small child (my Grandfather fed birds and watched them in his backyard)but have not pursued that interest until now. Now, I would like to get more involved in watching for birds and in bird photography. Problem is, I have no idea where in the world to start. I have one book, Smithsonian Handbooks, Birds of Texas. Any ideas?

I am an extreme newbie also - I live just outside Boston.
One book that we now keep right by our dining room window is Peterson's "Feeder Birds" guide for the northeastern U.S. It is simple, with good illustrations for sightings, and gives very basic food preferences. This is if you're interested in doing any birdwatching/bird feeding at home. I'm sure there is a southwestern U.S. version, which might be helpful.

I have no idea about bird photography, but there are some incredible bird photographers in this forum - you can see from some of the recent photos posted. I wish I were so talented!!

Good luck (to you and me) in this new fascinating pursuit.
And good for you for having a family that enjoys the outdoors.

I "grew up" with Peterson's Field Guide to the Birds of Texas. It's good because it has both the eastern and the western birds that you're likely to see. Look for classes at a nature center or Audubon Society, there's nothing like going out with a a group led by an experienced birder.

Hi! When you post on here we want to be able to email you. That way we don't put our address and private information on the site for all the stalkers and crazies to see. If you go to the bottom of the page it will say "Member Pages". Click on it. Then click on Edit Details (or something like that). You can enter your email address. It won't show up here. People will use the Gardenweb email system to contact you. You can also click on Member Pages and then Click on Edit Exchange Lists. There are 4 categories: seeds you have to trade, seeds you want, plants you ahve to trade and plants you want. Keep this up to date. Here's the trick. See at the top when you posted: Posted by manda713 none (My Page) on Tue, Mar 11, 14 at 21:02 Anyone who is logged in can click on (My Page) after your name to email you, look at your list, etc. That's how you email other people on the seeds they have to offer. It's one of those things that people on the site know, but the site doesn't do a good job explaining it. Then once you know the secret you're in! Now my listing will show that I've answered your thread. You can click on (My Page) after my name, then click on "send an email" and email your address. I can send you seeds to get started. Believe it or not I started a few years ago. I thought these people were crazy. They had lists of seeds longer than their arm. Now I have a list like that. It's truly an addiction, but I think it's a good one. You're not gambling or drinking. It may take over your allowance of money, but that's why you're here...to save seeds and save money! Some people are Gold level. They want to know the regular name (sunflower), the latin name (helianthus) and the cultivar or variety (russian mammoth). The more information you have, the happier people are. I'm closer to the Bronze level. I have found, however, that morning glories in Nebraska are vines and morning glories in California are bushes so that's why the latin name is good to put with it. You can google the latin name and find a picture. People here are generally very generous. They like to make good trades. Also there's a place where you clan leave rate and review. Feel free to look there and see what someone's reputation is with trades. I didn't keep track of trades when I started, but I only traded one at a time. Then I forgot what I was doing. Develop some kind of system to keep track of who you are trading with, what seeds they are sending, what seeds you are getting and when you sent. It gets mixed up pretty fast some days. We have a love-hate relationship with the post office. Sometimes it's slick and easy. Other times they charge extra, they smash seeds or they rip open envelopes. Be sure and cushion the seeds you send with kleenex or bubble wrap. Be sure and label your seeds well, too. Beware, this is a hobby that turns into an addition and we all deny it and we all love it! A mature hedgerow (??) like this could have a multitude of choice woodland plants that would never show in a photo like this - very little shows in this photo! The hedgerow at my mom's house in Western NY State (which probably has many of the same plants as possible in your Ohio location) has huge stands of trillium, bloodroot, numerous violets, trout lily, jack in the pulpit, ferns, and so much more. I personally would be excited by the possibilities. Sure there might be some undesirables - most any "wild" area these days has some. If you wish, you can deal with those over time or you can just mow up to the edge of the wooded area with little else required. But if the "wildness" truly terrifies you, you may wish to look for a more manicured location. And since hazards were mentioned....I will assume Ohio is much like here in Western NY State so: fire is never a problem, the rare heavy winds may be strong enough to break branches or even more rarely uproot trees, and an ice storm is probably the biggest danger to tree'd locations where we live. Though in the 40+ years my mom has had her house, only once was the ice enough to drop whole trees into her yard. FataMorgana

Thank you for your response Lehua13. Here are a few more things I want to share about my project: 1. No, I'm not installing this system myself. Because I'm paying someone else to do it, I'm quickly trying to get up to speed on what might be best for my situation so that I can intelligently discuss the job. At this point, I've gotten so much conflicting information, I was hoping for some expert advice by members of this forum. IOW, a bit of wisdom from folk who have no skin in my game, so to speak. :-) 2. I had one irrigation specialist come over just before I started this thread. He was heavy pushing lawn sprinklers and told me the job would cost me $1100. When I challenged that price and told him I had been thinking about soaker hoses, he dropped his quote all the way down to $300 (for labor and supply of the soaker hoses but no other components.) He claimed that the other components he would recommend (Hunter Mini Klick Sensor, Toro Lawn Master II and Orbit Water Master Timer plus 2 1" female valves) would cost me more than $300. However, when I did a quick check on eBay of those same items, the total amounted to nothing near such a tall price! The combo of the contradictions in his quote and that little bit of pricing research is what persuaded me to post my questions to this forum in the first place. 3. I don't know whether I want drip or sprinklers because I don't know what is best for my situation! From what I'm told, drip would be just fine for my project because the area to be irrigated is so small (less than 300 sf) and is closely planted. In fact, with respect to the last factor of close plantings, I'm hearing that soaker hose might be best of all. Also, because this is a rowhouse configuration, I am concerned about the reach and spread of the sprinklers into my adjacent neighbors' yards. Yet, a garden designer, and the one irrigation guy who has submitted a bid thus far both started off with suggesting sprinklers . . . as you have. Interesting. Two other irrigation specialists are slated to visit the site in the next two days. Depending on the results of those consultations, and if I'm still confused, I may post back here. Thanks again!

Good for you. This is a very informative result sheet. But doesn't the state of Ohio do cheap soil tests? Most states do (not California, though). 1. People routinely mistake silt soils for clay--I did the same thing long ago. Silt can be compacted almost as badly as clay, so you need to be careful about digging or stepping on it when it is wet. Your soil may have slightly less clay than is optimal, depending on how fine the clay is. However, a CEC of 17 indicates good nutrient retention. Silt holds water very well. 2. The yellowing of foliage--I'd predict--leaves the main veins still green, and it shows on the new leaves as soon as they open. This is iron deficiency caused by the high pH, despite there being lots of iron in the soil. Apply the 6 cups of sulfur per 100 sq ft evenly under the mulch and scratch it in lightly. It will take a year or so to lower the pH applied in this way. Then you will have greener leaves. Meanwhile you could apply an iron product according to directions--it may or may not help. Micronized sulfur, available at a good garden center, works fastest. 3. High magnesium: never apply Epsom salts. 4. Major nutrients: (N)-- This is just a normal requirement to add some source of nitrogen every year, regardless of the soil test. (K)--I disagree with the greensand recommendation, it is an expensive product because you need to use a huge amount of it. They mention it because there is no ideal organic source for straight potassium. Rose Tone or a balanced manufactured fertilizer will give all the N and K you need. (P)--You need not apply phosphorus and should avoid high-P fertilizer. 5. I think the gypsum recommendation is superfluous but probably harmless. Are these folks trying to sell you stuff?

Hi, welcome to what can become a fascinating hobby.

You can be involved in birding as little or as much as you like with any kind of digital camera with at least a 10 X zoom. Binoculars and point and shoot cameras start in the hundreds and run into the thousands if you switch to DSLR cameras, and the lenses can cost as much or more. But you don't have to take photos to enjoy birds, and I bot an excellent light-weight 24X pair of bins for $100

If you just want to feed birds instead of going out into their habitat, there are inexpensive feeder bird booklets in WalMart in the birdseed section.
You can feed black oil sunflower seed in tube feeders, maybe have a hanging suet feeder and an inexpensive bird bath, but some people on this forum put in sunken pools or buy solar powered bird bath fountains, so you can pay anything there also.

Left alone, Nature stays in balance, but when humans start putting out food things can quickly get out of hand.

If you use tray feeders or feed scraps, dog food, cracked corn, peanuts, or cheap bird seed, you might quickly flood the neighborhood with aggressive non-native species such as Starlings and House Sparrows, as well as Grackles, Blue Jays, squirrels, chipmunks, and if you spread food on the ground, probably raccoons and rats..all quickly breeding and multiplying on your coin, and preying on the native song-bird population you want to watch.

I only keep a couple of feeders under my eaves because I prefer to do my birding where birds are not artificially fed. Most feeder birds eat seeds or suet and I prefer to observe/photograph warblers and vireos, if I can do it.

If you bird in a wildlife sanctuary, or near a wetland or ocean you might be able to bird from your car; I took many wonderful photos from the car when we visited FL over New Year. In fact, that's my preferred method now that it's tick season!
That can work if you have a large bird that lets you approach, or a camera with strong zoom, preferably all three..

Here's a photo taken yesterday coming back from swimming on Poppy Mnt. We turned off the car engine and rolled forward to observe these wild turkeys crossing the road ahead

There are several people on this board from North Texas, including myself.
The Smithsonion guide is a good one, but I would suggest you get both Peterson's and Kaufman's guide to Birds of Texas. I've picked up both at Half Price Books in the DFW area.
The great thing about our area is we are on the edge of many birds range of both Western and Eastern species. It's not unusual to see both at the feeder, especially in winter.
Rachel has given you some excellant advice. This board is a wealth of knowlege, so read as much as you can and you will find it's an exciting and rewarding hobby.
