How many types of birds come to your yard.

My Granddaughter was here last week and she ask me how many birds come to our yard, so I started listing and she started to write them down.

When the list was complete I was shocked.

We had listed 60.

How many do you have?

Here is a picture of my newest visitors.

I've got about 40 different types. But I bet I'm missing some. It's unbelievable when you think about it -- especially how clueless you were before you got into birds.

Short story about cluelessness: I saw the librarian at the school I work at show a group of 20 kids a pretty picture of a summer tanager -- she told them it was a cardinal. I just had to speak up!

Internal laying, how many of your hens have died from it?

Some call this egg bind--but no matter what you call it, it is usually caused by a mineral deficiency. 5 mgs of Boron dissolved in 1 gallon of water and served as the only drinking water will solve this condition unless it is a genetic abnormality. Boron tells the body where to utilize calcium properly. Most layer feeds are rich in calcium and vitamin D, vitamin K and magnesium but very little boron. These vitamins/minerals control the bodies absorbs and utilization of calcium within their systems. Boron also lowers cholesterol levels in their eggs when use at 5 mgs/gallon water. Do not increase this level of boron for it will have an opposite effect decreasing egg production and increasing cholesterol levels. I use boron supplementation during the winter and early spring in my laying hens for this is the most stressful period for them.

And now, how many brugs are in your yard?

Trigger, I am going to have to make a few bags for brugs. Maybe call it a brug bag. You never know here. It flirts with 35 quite a few times. If the sky goes clear at 35 I am in trouble. LOL I will get some clear plastic and 2 x 4 s and a propane torch and make a few giant bags unless someone knows a better way or source. I have a few super plants worth the effort. They do look neat wrapped in clear plastic with Christmas lights. I did it last winter but mine have outgrown their 4 cu ft clear bags. These ones will need to be 8' x 5' for a good seal and ease of installation. The only problem with this is it can go from 30 at night to 75-80 the next day. LOL Then they would bake unless I removed the bag. I will find a middle ground. I hate to learn by trial and error. I am just too old......... Jim

Barry I bought the lotus seeds from someone on Ebay. It was a few years ago and I don't remember who it was but I do remember that they weren't expensive, maybe 5 seeds for a few dollars. Lots of people have them. Just look for someone that has good feedback. I wouldn't buy or start them until early spring. They grow really fast and it's not something that you'd want in the house. I planted mine in barrels because we didn't have any pond at the time and they outgrew them within a couple months. I started the seeds in a glass of water and planted them as soon as I saw the root which was about a week. Karyn

What birds do you not want to nest in your yard?

According to the Migratory Bird Act, it is illegal to remove nests of any native migratory birds. "Unless permitted by regulations, the Act provides that it is unlawful to pursue, hunt, take, capture or kill; attempt to take, capture or kill; possess, offer to or sell, barter, purchase, deliver or cause to be shipped, exported, imported, transported, carried or received any migratory bird, part, nest, egg or product, manufactured or not." "Birds protected under the act include all common songbirds, waterfowl, shorebirds, hawks, owls, eagles, ravens, crows, native doves and pigeons, swifts, martins, swallows and others, including their body parts (feathers, plumes etc), nests, and eggs." There are over 800 species of bird protected by this act. My understanding is that the only birds whose nests it is legal to destroy are House Sparrows, European Starlings, pigeons, and a few odd others (escaped parakeets, e.g.). Even house wrens are protected. http://www.sialis.org/mbta.htm Here is a link that might be useful: Migratory Bird Treaty

Since last August I now live in W.Massachusetts but prior to that I lived in N.E. Ohio. According to the National Audubon Society Ohio has about 413 native species, which is the highest number in any of the states, and Michigan ranks #2 with about 400 species.

In less than one year I managed to photo document 117 species in our yard and another 21 species at a small lake nearby. I saw a few more but I only officially counted the ones that I had photographed and had the identity confirmed by an ornithologist at the county extension service.

Well I best get busy if I am going to get to the 400.
I have a pond, lots of trees, an open field across from my house and a field that has been planted by Pheasants Forever (I have not seen one in about 15 years) and we feed.
Not sure what else I can do to make more come to my yard, but I know that there are lots of birds at the top of the trees that I don't know what they are---best get out the binoculars and start watching more.
