question about winter

I am new to bluebird nesting. I live in the midlands of SC and just looked out my back window and there are about 6 bluebirds on the nesting box. Is this normal and what is the appropriate thing to do for them this winter? Guess this is a stupid question but I am new to all of this!!

Hi Shymouse.

We have had blues nesting for the last 3 years and we usually don't see them until early in the year -- around March, but for the last few weeks they have been appearing at our boxes. Usually there are just a male and female but the other week we had about 5 here!

This morning Mama and Papa were here again (we're having a cold front move through and it's nice and crisp today). Unfortunately we also had what we think were two house wrens babbling and flapping at each other and a house sparrow. We've been really fortunate not to have had these in the past but today they were all here at once!

In a nutshell, we we're kind of puzzled too by their early arrival here... (N. Fl). We were beginning to wonder if maybe our memories were just going and we've had them before and forgotten!!! (Think we might start a journal this time with dates and arrivals etc.)

Our attached garage dips into the teens during our coldest month January here in suburb south of Chicago . They fair well but are older plants in large containers. 55 may to warm for storage. If you brought out your plants during upper 40s thats fine but when those temps at night dropped into the 20 to 30s thats not good for its best to bring them in at night. This is what i have always done to get a jump start on the season i call the fig shuffle. Lots of work but at end of fig season that 2 to 3 week jump start pays off. Martin

For those of us who use Oceangro, I found the following on their website: 4.5% of the 5% nitrogen in OCEANGRO® is water insoluble which means that soil microbes break down most of OCEANGRO® to make it available for plant uptake. When used on turf, OCEANGRO® works best in the thatch layer or under the soil where microbial activity takes place. In thin turf areas, OCEANGRO® will work best if lightly top-dressed or worked into the soil via aeration, vertical mowing or slit seeding. Only a small percentage of OCEANGRO® will break down by water and sunlight. For this reason, OCEANGRO® is environmentally friendly because there is less chance for the fertilizer to leach into groundwater sources. Probably a phone call to Milorganite would answer any questions about the real fast/ slow release content and why it seems to be changing.

The guy who is an expert on it is Hector Wong - he is hanging on a facebook. Ask him. Here is a quote form his advice: using LED strips, of a combination of cool white or warm white. the fine details are: 1- all strips come in rolls of 16.4 ft (5 meters) 2- be sure the ones you get are 2835 SMD and also 600 leds. 2835 refers to the size of each diode (do not get 3528, do not get 5050, these are outdated technology, too dim). 600 leds refer to the total number of diodes per 5 meter roll, or 120 leds per meter. If you get 300 instead of 600 leds, it is too dim! 3- per shelf, you will need to run 2 strips of cool white and 2 of warm white.

I order container trees and shrubs in Nov/Dec most years from Rarefind Nurseries because they tend to have great year end sales. Always plant them if the ground is not frozen and have never lost one. For the dogwood and baldcypress, you may want to plant them in a more sheltered spot temporarily. I planted a redbud at Xmas during one of the recent brutal winters and it did not miss a beat.
