Blues still here

When do the blues fly south? I live in MI and would have thought they would be gone by now. I have also noticed they come back every morning and they fly to the nesting boxes, the female will go in and stay for about 15 to 20 min. There are 6 males with her, but one always stays on the box until she leaves. I don't know what to think. Anyone have any suggestions on what these beauties are doing?

Bluebirds are "short-distance migrants." Sometimes they migrate and sometimes they don't. Weather and food supplies are also a factor. Check the the link below, and view maps for CBC (Christmas Bird Count) and BBS (Breeding Bird Survey) to see the trends in your area. These are surveys done by volunteers twice a year.
We often see Spring-like behavior in the Fall when temperature and day-length mimic Spring. If the bluebirds stay resident all year in your area, they often continue to protect and defend what they consider "their territory" year-round.

I think it is remarkable that Suntory is allowing such enormous investments to advance rose science when they still only have the promise of true blue and no guarantee of return on their investment. Some people don't seem to realize that these scientists put just as much effort, determination and passion into their work as any classical hybridizer. Even if their goal is not what we value highest in our roses, they should be respected for their work. Oh, and don't tell me you don't want one. Did you say the same thing when orange roses were released? You know you WILL buy one as soon as those evil enablers start posting gorgeous pictures of blue roses on GW! Coincidentally, we just did two samples on the wall yesterday. They seem to look a lot like Buxton Blue--they're gorgeous, but they might be too blue or gray for us--we're not sure yet (we'd been aiming for more green-blue in color). They are Sherwin Williams Underseas and SW Halycon Green. Alas, there aren't any good photos on the web of them. Another similar blue that I've seen rave reviews for is BM Wythe Blue. There are great photos on the web of that! We bought three more samples yesterday, but if we do pick one and paint, I'll post! Good luck!

Yes, we still do! I have done 4 exchanges on here in the last 2 years and all have been very positive. Until you mentioned it, I never even noticed the "exchange" tab at the top of the forum page. I guess I am just used to the messages here. But I've had some very good exchanges from this forum and from good traders. I have some great blue lobelia (my favorite new perennial) but it is still blooming and would be better to trade when the stalks go down and the plant forms its basal crown in the fall. I also have some Geranium pyrenaicum... a sprawling hardy Geranium with white flowers throughout the growing season, ...again these would all be better to trade in the fall. I also have some nigella seeds ... of course they are annuals but as I'm sure you know, readily re-seeding annuals. If those are fair game for you, then I will have some seeds for blue and white Mt. Fuji morning glories as well. I would be interested in your burgungy daylilies. Any thoughts? Let me know George

Still looking for blue paint color ideas for blue pearl countertops

i'm at my vacation home, which has blue pearl countertops. my benjamin moore fan deck is at home so i cant compare but i believe my walls are painted BM glass slipper. i dont know that its a color i'd want for the island tho... more of a wall color. i'd go for more of a medium dark grey-thinking-about-blue for an island.

Molly, I live in NW Ohio and my birds overwinter here. There's Malinda who lives in MI and she has shown pics before of her house with lots of snow and many bluebirds eating at her mealworm feeder.

Hi Molly,

We're in St.Louis MO which is quite far south of you, but we had two pair over-winter with us... and it does get quite cold here.

This is Mr.B and Missy, our nesting pair who gave us 13 beautiful fledglings this year, and they're all still with us right now:

It's very possible you could still have yours when the snow comes too. They need liquid water and food, but otherwise can survive cold, so you never know... yours might stay with you.
