The active ingrediant in moth balls is naphthalene, a class 1 carcinogen so moth balls should never be used in any many not specifically outlined on the packaging, always in a sealed container. Besides it is a violation of Federal Law to use them other than prescibed. Squirrels can be a real pain for us bird feeders, but there are ways to keep them from the feeders. First never put a feeder closer to anything a squirrel can climb and jump from than 10 or 12 feet. second be sure the feeder is high enough off the ground that they cannot jump to it (I have seen the wee buggers jump 4 feet to reach a feeder). Third if the feeder is held up by wire thread some 2 liter plastic bottles on that wire, drill holes just a bit larger than the wire so when a squirrel does get ont that bottle will simply spin around. Fourth if the feeder is pole mounted get a 2 foot section of 8 inch sheet metal duct, make a round wooden disk to put in the top of the duct with a hole just large enough in the wood to slip over the pole, after placing something on the pole to keep that duct up of the ground, and put the duct work on your pole. The squirrels will still climb up that pole but the duct work will keep them from getting to the feeder. For one feeder I have what is called a "Twirl A Squirrel" a device that twirls the feeder around when a squirrel gets on it that worked quite well for a time until the squirrels found they could still hang on and eat all the while getting a ride. There is also a, very expensive, feeder out there that has an electric fence like charger that jolts the squirrels (they make contact with two pieces of metal that the birds will not) so they get knocked off. Theoretically the squirrels "learn" to stay away from those types of feeders, but in reality not that I have seen. If food is there they will try everything to get to it.

Love the peliated Nicholsworth! Are they really as big as they seem in the pictures? We had a shot of snow last week as well, but since then it's been bluebird skies so not a whole lot of action at our feeders. However, the beautiful days this weekend made it fun to get out and enjoy the outdoors, and had a chance to see a ton of raptors out at Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR. I also drove down to Santa Fe, and was hoping to check out the Randall Davey Audubon Center while I was there, unfortunately they are closed until February. Anyways, I switched out the peanut butter on my little aspen log feeder with some stuff called "bark butter." Advertised to be loved by over 125 different species of birds. Seems mine prefer just regular old Kroger brand crunchy peanut butter that is 1/3 the price... Also, I have started to notice that all the birds at my feeders significantly prefer safflower to BOSS. They wont hardly touch the sunflower seed feeders, but I have to refill the safflower ones pretty frequently. Perhaps we have just habituated them to safflower over the years. The millet experiment is also going well. The song sparrow shows up more often and the juncos absolutely love it. Even the white breasted nuthatch was trolling the ground with them. So far I have still only seen the single house sparrow, so that's good.

One looks like Tall fescue, and the other Dallis grass. The Dallis grass( and other weeds in the picture) can be killed with 'Bayer advanced all in one'. The Tall fescue has to be sprayed with 'Round up' the resulting dead spot re-seeded a couple weeks later.

I have some experience with this plant. You can try saving your dracaena by taking it out of the wet soil it's currently in, and letting the roots air out and dry out for about a day; then, repot it in new, well draining soil and give it very little water. I, too, think that every other day is much too often to water a dracaena. Let the soil dry out slightly between waterings - I'm thinking it'd only need watering maybe every 10-14 days, or even less frequent, depending on the soil. Best of luck!
