Green Herron

Altough the Green Herrons range throughout the northeast region, they are considered very elusive.

According to the state audubon society this is the first confirmed sighting of them in my local area.

I have located a pair and I think I have discovered their nesting site although that will require additional observations to confirm.

The Green Herron is a rather small bird generally standing about 15" high with its neck outstretched.

While researching this bird I discovered a very interesting habit. They fly down on the lilly pads, then drop bits of insects, small twigs or even a feather on the water to attract small fish to the surface. Pretty smart if you ask me.
