I'm in central Maryland, deedee, and my blues appear to be finished for the season. No 3rd nestings on any of the trails this year because of the late spring start most of the birds made. I'm still checking boxes, though, so that the house sparrows don't get any ideas. I'd be surprised if you got a nesting this late in the season especially since your birds are probably beginning their molt--the adults into new plumage and the fledglings into adult plumage.
Enjoy the break because Nesting Season 2010 will be here before you know it!

Thanks Kathy for your advise your probably right but I did see the Bluebird family last night down in our neighbors b ack yard on the wire, were out in the country and our neighbors are about an acre away...I used the binoc's to see them and mom,dad and 3 babies were there so I don't know what happened to one baby or he might have been sitting somewhere else.

deedee, I live out in the country as well and am seeing the fruits of nesting season--bluebirds can be seen and heard all over our neighborhood! Last year I had a female build a substantial nest during the month of October. I will admit that she scared me to death because I thought she might just start laying eggs--but the blues just used the nest to roost in! You honestly can never be sure what they will do and as soon as you think you know, you're wrong!

They do keep us guessing don't they? We have a completed nest (for a third brood) since the first week in August, but still no eggs. It still looks untouched, yet the blue family visits everyday begging for mealworms. She wove one of her feathers into the nest, and it has not been disturbed. They still guard the nestbox, and go in and out occasionally. Ours are resident year-round.

BlueBars, I was in your neck of the woods yesterday as my friend and I drove our crochet projects to be entered in the State Fair. We stopped at the Double TT and had dinner--this is our third year making this trek and I'm thinking it has become a tradition! We'll go on Sunday to see if we earned any ribbons.
Other than one house sparrow attempt at one of the park trails, nesting season seems to be over here. I'll check the boxes for another week or two, then take a breather before taking stock of what needs replaced/repaired for next year. I'm thinking that nest of yours was wishful thinking on your couple's part . . . kind of along the lines of 'mind willing-body weak'. Lots of good eating (grasshoppers and tons of berries) going on now!

Hi everyone your right they keep me guessing sitting out on our deck yesterday eve around 6:30pm and mom & dad and 3 babies were back. Dad and baby were sitting on the bluebird house....watched them dive for food the babies seem to be doing fine at getting there food. So weird might not see them for a couple of days and then they're here in early eve feeding. Babies have now been flying for about 2 wks. We've had a cool August here in St. Louis area and noticeing trees already changing and the robins are gone.... 5 days ago Robins were everywhere and now your lucky if you see one. I can't wait for next spring to watch the Blues again, since I didn't get the house up till late this year (May)....I hope to enjoy many babies next year.
