One thing that helps us bird nerds properly ID sightings is the location of the sighting. Considering you guessed this may be a Western Wood Pewee, I assume your geographical location is somewhere west of the central plains states.

However, your bird (above) is a Northern Mockingbird and their year-round range includes the entire lower 48.

Eastern/Western Wood Pewees (which are species of Tyrant Flycatcher) are much smaller, shorter-tailed, and relatively larger-headed than a Northern Mockingbird. Pewees are typically found in deciduous/mixed forest are are best ID'd by their distinct song.

Thank you so much! My location is Oceanside, CA. After I posted this photo, the bird returned twice. I'm determined to get a clear photo. Here is another shot, again taken with my cell. Charging my digital to hopefully get a better photo. We get so many birds in our yard. They are beautiful. This is my new hobby :)

There is no blue bird marked like this guy, so I really think the lighting just fooled you a bit. And he isn't blue in these pictures, really. He's definitely a slate gray, which is exactly right for a mockingbird in the shadows. I have showed your photo to my "expert" birding friends, and they have all said it is a northern mockingbird. Isn't it interesting how the look of a bird can change, based on where you are observing him? BTW, no blue birds are really blue looking in the shade, just as a tidbit. There is no blue pigment in bird feathers. The blue your eyes see is refracted light, and varies hugely from sun to shade. Bluebirds in shade will often look almosts black, depending on how much ambient light is hitting them. Just a useless bit of trivia for ya, but it does make me remember that in comparison, a gray bird will often look MORE blue in the shade, rather than less. Marcia

The swallowtail kites are not likely after your baby mockers, earlybird. They eat on the wing and usually eat large insects, small snakes, lizards and things they snatch out of the treetops. They are without a doubt my favorite bird of prey, having the most beautiful markings and expressive faces of any, to my mind. And here is a shot of a STK eating...something GREEN...while flying. (Hopefully a Cuban treefrog!) Your wood stork photos are beautiful! Magnificent big ol' birds! Ya gotta love 'em! And brown thrashers are very common throughout most of the state. They are first cousins to mockingbirds. But many people never notice them, and since they don't normally come to feeders, they can be overlooked. (Mine have been coming to my feeders, however, ever since I started to use a mix with fruits and nuts in it.) Marcia

The Towhees around here-East Tennessee-certainly sing the "Drink" part of their song, also the "Tea" part-sometimes written as towhee. This am I heard "Drink, drink, drink....long pause...your tea" Then just "drink drink..." I think it's a little later in the year when I hear the "tea" or "towhee" part alone. Right now I have an Eastern Wood Peewee that repeats "pee-oh-wee" over & over & it's kinda mournful sounding. He sings from a cedar tree in a small cemetary across the road & it seems fitting somehow. Susan

This photo is terrific. Northern Mockingbird, undoubtedly.

Bird watching is a great hobby to take up! Perhaps begin a yard list. Enjoy!
