OT - Bat house

We have three BB nestboxes with eggs in them, but the parents are staying away from our deck for some reason. Therefore, no recent photos.

BUT...we have a bat house which my kids gave me a year ago Christmas. We noticed something in it last night, so we went out this evening before dark and discovered a flying squirrel living in the bat house. Just thought you might be interested. We think it is kind of neat.

Really???Flying Squirrels can get in a bat house? We have had one up for 3 years and I have never seen a Bat in there, though I know SOMETHING is in there. Such a small opening in the bottom, I thought it may be mice? DH did bring me out one night a year or so ago to show me some flying Squirrels near our wood pile. Very Cute! The house is mounted high enough but from what I understand there needs to be a clear drop from the house, we have some Polk Berry shrubs growing pretty tall up that tree. The Pileateds love it so much I dont want to cut it down. I did have a Bat on my Sun Porch last year, looked pretty hot and lethargic, hubby was able to catch and release it, it flew off so I hope it was OK.

Harold I was wondering what happened to you and have REALLY missed your photos!! Glad you like the squirrels. I think they're neat too. I found out a few years ago I have flying squirrels around here when the neighbors cat killed one on my back patio.

I just saw something on television about this. They suggested that size is one of the factors of success. They mentioned that many people build them too small and then the bats don't use them. Because they are social animals, they want them big enough to hold a couple hundred. The one they made was a couple feet tall and a foot and a half across (my estimate). They mentioned they needed to be quite high up for the bats to be able to fly because they are really gliders and need to start up high in order to fly. They also said that you should stain them with dark stain to absorb the sun because they need to stay warm. That is about all I know about them. My dad had a huge colony in our barn when I was a kid. They kind of creeped me out. I know they are good animals to have around, but I haven't gotten the courage to put one up yet.

ok igloochic and mike_r - I thought this was a SAFE forum - no BUGS or BATS!!!! :) I must admit, I am truly amazed that there is a market for those pendants!! And I am in awe of people that are confident enough of their taste and sense of style that they can get away with actually putting them in their house!!! I have so much to learn here. sigh. I'm just trying to work up the courage to use jodi_in_ca's and berryberry's Fire & Ice for a backsplash.... you know, that little bit of glass tile is just so OUT THERE!! Karla (who rarely leaves her comfort zone - but is lurking here to get ideas and the inspiration to actually "go-for-it"!

I don't know what is going on. Like I said, we have three nestboxes with BB eggs in each one. One of the boxes is right in my back yard. But the BBs don't seem to have any interest in coming for mealworms. Any one else have this situation?
