only slightly OT: honeysuckle
Comments (14)NO and NO! Don't compost or mulch with the chipped branches! They will root like you wouldn't believe. And be super super careful if you burn them - especially this time of year. They are rich in oils and burn like candle wicks - a MAJOR cause of springtime wildfires around here. If you know anyone with goats - give it to them. They'll love it. And if your zone 5/6 border is in Southeast Ohio drop me an e-mail and I might know 8 goats that would like it. :) Seriously, find someone with livestock and offer it to them. There was a fire several years ago that swept the 20 acres behind us - lighting up dormant honeysuckle and then jumping 10 - 50 feet to ignite one patch after another. I've never seen fire move so fast. I'd hate to think of what it would do in a wood burner. One of the reasons we keep goats is to keep the area around our house clear of honeysuckle. They clear it right out and leave a nice firebreak behind. If you have a local freecycle and listed it somebody would probably come get it for goat snacks. Lynda...See MoreOT: Gecko granny
Comments (4)I don't know if she laid eggs someplace and they hatched or if they were born live. There must be 6 or 8 of them running around. I have been seeing little ones in the garage too. They are really tiny and almost see through. They are really cute. I don't do golf either but enjoy seeing the golf courses that they build when we get the grand tour on the golf cart if they are far enough along in the construction phase when we visit. I saw the one in Colorado when it was almost done but thats the only one I got to see being built. The others were already done and we just rode by and looked at them if we were near one while traveling. He does good work. I wonder what there is to do in Tulsa. I haven't had a vacation in a long time. I would like to do something fun while we are there....See MoreSummer project is finally wrapping up (warning slightly OT)
Comments (6)That is very effective as a landscaping effort. You did a great job. It's a lot of work, but if you do such a project as you did it, a little at a time, you eventually get what you like. I'm a great believer in doing something gradually. I bet while you were working on it, you made a few tweaks which were not thought about when you started. Better to do so as you go along than after it's done and you think, "Well I wish I'd thought about doing that....." Cannot wait to see your pictures of this creek when winter arrives and the rocks and creek add to the beauty of your property....See MoreThis is what I am up against. Slightly OT.
Comments (19)Talk to some good architects about ideas on how to transform this to more-residential use (common in cities BTW - all sorts of former factories are now trendy lofts), and if you're not completely smitten with it now, consider waiting to see if the asking price falls further (or better yet, just put in a lowball bid). If real-estate agents and HGTV are to be believed, lots of people can't look beyond clutter and oddly-colored paint, much less how to turn a big garage into a house, so you may be able to score a great deal on a good property and/or location. Without seeing the inside or floorplan, much less the infrastructure (will you need to dig up concrete to install plumbing, electric, and ductwork?), it's hard to know what this renovation would cost. I'm inclined to keep one of the garage doors and use it as a garage, and perhaps make a bay window or separate vertical windows, or just siding/brick/stone, on the other and put a room behind it. Real estate is still wildly overpriced by every traditional metric in many markets though - it seems a near-certainty another wave of coming foreclosures will drive prices down further until they're at near-2000 prices, so I'm reluctant to buy at all yet unless the price looks seriously appealing....See Moreroselee z8b S.W.
