What kind of nest in onions?

I found the weirdest thing yesterday: I was working in my garden when I noticed what I thought were some dry weeds in my green onion patch (about 2' x 2' x 2'). When I looked closer I realized there was a bird's nest (!!!) in the middle of the onions about halfway between the top and the ground. It's made entirely of long, thin strips of dried grass / weeds (very uniform). There are no eggs in it, but the actual cup is about 2" across. The whole nest is much bigger - maybe 6".

Does anyone have any idea what kind it might be? I haven't worked in my garden very much at all this year, but birds hang out there a lot. (I see mostly robins flying away w/ lunch in their mouths, but I've seen some small birds - sparrows? finches? - as well.

Also, I was out there about 10 hrs. yesterday (trying to catch up!) and never saw a bird trying to get near the onions. Could I possibly have scared them off by suddenly being out there all day? Is there anything I should do?

Thanx!
