Two dead indigo buntings

I came home today and found two male indigo buntings dead by my large picture window. I guess they were being territorial and not watching and they crashed into the window. It made me sick. I have had a sporadic bird thru the years but never two before. What can I do to prevent this again?

Oh gosh flowerchild, that is a really sad finding. I feel sure that you are correct. They must have crashed right into the window. My sister has a female Bluebird who is attacking her windows, and she found a website that sells really nice window decals to prevent this kind of thing from happening. The ones she bought were quite pretty. Here is the site if you want to check it out. I am sure that lots of businesses sell this type of thing. You can Google for more of them. That's what I would do. I would put up some decals to try to alert them so that you decrease the chances of having this happen again.~~Angie

It was specifically the Cardinal Alert strips that my sister purchased. She bought several of them because her window is large. Anyway, they looked really nice on the window. Any of the decals would work though.

Oh boy, nckvilledudes, you've got that right...this is another one I've quit growing because of the seedlings. I had it planted next to Rosea glauca. It made a beautiful composition with iris crestata at their feet. But, every year come late spring I'd have hundreds of seedlings from both the baptisia & the rose (even out into the turfgrass area) that I order their execution! I had to or I'd be living in a two-plant ecosystem. I miss them both; they were lovely. Part of the problem was I let the rose develop hips because that's such a big part of the plant's beauty & likewise with the seed pods of the baptisia, the seed pods carry the show long after the flowers are gone. I wonder if Preen would have stopped the ridiculous seed germination (worse than maple trees)? I don't like to use stuff like Preen but miss these two plants. Tricia

Grosbeak or Bunting?

From the angle of the photo it's harder to tell, but seems to be a male Indigo Bunting. The Blue Grosbeaks are over an inch longer than Indigo Buntings, have heavier bills, larger heads, rusty wing-bars, but the head-on photo makes proportions difficult, and you can't see the wings. I've heard of Indigo Buntings coming to feeders for millet, but never a Blue Bunting. I'd take either one!!

Thanks, and me too..I grew up 5 miles from the ocean in Haiti. We used to have beach parties on New Year, but we're land-locked at the moment. I'm thrilled to be able to swim on Poppy Mnt, only 1 1/2 miles from here, because it's semi-deserted at the moment. DuBois and I used to drive 15 miles to swim in the Licking River or in a deserted pond over the mnt from us where we had to hike through tick-infested brush to reach it. But, speaking of oceans, this year we did skip down to FL for our anniversary over New Year and camped at Ft Desoto Natl Park but it was too cold to swim. But I could take photos of wonderful birds from the car 12-31-08, dock beside Gulf Blvd, preening American Oystercatcher, 4:19 p.m. From 12-30-08, Florida trip This is a link to the first day at Ft Desoto in my photo album. One way is to go to photobucket.com and open a free account. Upload your pictures to that account. After uploading them hover your cursor over them and you will see a box with several lines of code. Click on the one that says 'html code' and it will be saved. Go to your gardenweb post and paste that code where you want the picture to be. You can put more than one in the post. When you preview the pictures will show up where you pasted the codes.

Well thanks Lisa dear. Here is a pic of my sister's actual window with the Cardinal Alert Strips on it. She did put a 3rd strip up on the bare portion. Pretty, hey? Looks like a church window!

You are welcome flowerchild. This stuff worked well for my sister. The idea is to prevent window strikes and also to discourage territorial birds who want to repeatedly attack their own reflections. :o)
