The darn wrens are at it again!!!

My BB nest box was raided by the wrens and they destroyed the eggs.I had a sparrow spooker up after the first egg.The BBs had a hard time adjusting to it.I knew the wrens were around the side of the house busy at another nest box. I kept them busy by removing the twigs and letting them work to fill it.The eggs had been incubated for 7 days and I was eagerly waiting for the big day.This is our second nesting.There is ONE egg that is not broken but the BBs are no where to be found. Ants have filled the nest.There is NO way to rid the yard of wrens because my neighbor has a "wren house" as he calls it and he breeds them and send them to my yard.They are annoying.I feel very bad for the Blues as I enticed them to my yard with meal worms and could not offer them a safe home.

Hi Michelle, I responded on the other thread that you posted on. If the wrens have already found the nestbox it may be too late to do anything about it this year. You need to make a wren guard and use it before the wrens find the opening to your bluebird nestbox. Go to www.sialis.org to learn how to make and use a wren guard. For this year I'm afraid I would tell you to give up and either take down the nestboxes or open the doors so that they can't be used. I'm sorry you are having a problem but you can try again next year.

Thank you for your advice.I agree with you. I have to try again next year.I could not find my thread that I originally posted and so I had to type one again.I think that I am too upset about the lost eggs to be able to think staraight.

I was talking to someone today who has a cabin in the mountains, and is pretty savvy on bear issues. They meticulously haul out all food stuffs when they leave, and wash down the sinks and drains with disinfectant, to make sure there is nothing left that might attract bears. On top of that, they have welded 1/4" mesh on all the windows and doors. So, they went up this past weekend, hoping to spend the week, and came back down for stuff to repair the damage. A bear had pulled the weld mesh off the door, broke the door, got into the kitchen and tore open the pad-locked fridge, which had nothing in it. Some sort of residual smell or something. Around here, we only see them in the fall when they're out and about from the canyons into all the old orchards. The absolutely worst thing you can do is have an over-ripe cantaloupe in the garden or the compost. They'll be there.

Those darn gophers are at it again!

Another idea with gophers. My neighbor has 3 lemon and orange trees that must have been planted decades ago, maybe in the 50's. They are healthy and yield lots of fruit every year. On close examination, they are planted in the ground in their original contains. The containers appear to be made of old steel, some in wooden boxes. Maybe 2-3 ft in diameter. The trees vary in height from 4 to 10 ft. We want to plant a citrus tree on our property. We have a problem with gophers who have eaten the roots of fresh rose plants and killed them. Some have suggested putting wire mesh around the rose root ball to keep the gophers away until the roots have been established. We just tried that with a couple of new roses to see if it works. Could we protect a new citrus tree (probably a dwarf lemon or orange) from the gophers by simply planting the container in the ground? Our neighbors citrus seem to be doing fine in the old containers. I can't dig them out but I assume the roots of my neighbors citrus trees have pushed their way through the containers over the years? Unless someone else has more ideas, here's my plan. I'm going to move the current empty egg nest and pole away from trees, about 15' aways. I'll equip it with hole guard, wren guard, and preditor guards.. hopefully the move will be accepted by the birds. As soon as I can, I'll erect another house as far away from the trees as possible. If the wren has ruined this nesting there will be another spot to nest. Without trees near by my biggest concern then will be heat. I may remodel the house with heat guards. If this all fails, I may just give up on expecting 2nd broods here. To tell you the truth, I'm a bit discouraged and frustrated.. how in the heck do these birds ever reproduce!!

Before throwing it out I would wait a day. Last time there was a warning it ended up only being Romaine from a very small area. Which was announced within a couple of days. With Thursday being a holiday it may take longer this time. Simply put it in an extra bag for now. If it turns out from the effected area and/or it is no longer good toss it.

Michelle, I am so sorry. I am keeping my fingers crossed for the five bluebird eggs in my box right now. I do have a wren guard on the box but since I found a few twigs in that box (and my other two boxes) before this last nest was built I know that the wrens have been in the box at least once.

I NEVER see them or hear them but obviously, they are here. Wish they weren't.

In the past I have been successful in keeping the Wrens busy at other boxes by removing the twigs and distracting them with new boxes away from the nesting Blues. It is a full time job.This time I did the same tricks but it did not work.
I will pray for you.I hope that you can keep the pests away some how.
