single dad

Hi all,

Here is my backyard dad. He has been working diligently feeding his 4 babies on his own. Mom blue disappeared last Friday. The babies are 17 days old today. He is looking somewhat "ragged" to me. The feather on his back, right side, has been protruding out for many weeks. But now, he has other feathers on his back that appear "out of place". From my memory and from what I have read, molting typically takes place later in the season. He is not molting yet is he??? As I watch him feed his babies, he enters the box and then backs out backwards. This seems to have contributed to this appearance of "broken/out of place" feathers. I am just very worried about him and the babies. I do fear that a hawk took mom blue. Because there seems to be less than normal bird activity in my yard and I did spot a hawk earlier this week, I worry that the hawk is "ever present", which is not a good thing since these babies should fledge any time.
