OT hummer at the dessert bar

i have one little hummer who has found the grape jelly i put out for the orioles. he's been there often, sinks his beak in and gorges himself. what a hoot!

if you look to the right of him and up a little, you can see another male wondering what the heck his buddy is eating. :O

LOL, with the hummingbird feeder hanging right next door! Go figure!

I am finding that alot of birds like grape jelly. I have a male rbwp and female grosbeak, a pair of catbirds, and finches, that come to the jelly feeder every day. I have never seen a hummer eat jelly. What a great picture!!!

I see the other male looking at him like he is nuts. LOL

We've been going down for about 25 years, mainly for the Arabian horse show and have probably driven by the DBG a hundred times never even noticing. I actually thought about you as we were going through. Thanks for the tip ! Yes, the quail were running everywhere and the wrens were flitting about and the hummers were thick. My wife has always loved the prickly pears, especially the ones with the purple tint and they were gorgeous. We spent half the tour saying purple prickly pear three time fast :-) My sister bought a new home in Gilbert and if she can be patient, I promised her I'd do her courtyard. She has a wedding coming up quickly and was going to just throw some stuff in there so she could entertain. It's a Tuscan style two story with only a 10' x 40' +/- side yard on one side but I love a challenge. I drew it up on the plane coming home. Like many people down there, she's a recent transplant and when I was trying to explain to her about using more desert native type plant material, she just looked at me funny. Since it may be awhile till we buy our own down there, this would give me a chance to practice. Here is a link that might be useful:

I've got a lot of hungry woodpeckers so I have to keep them happy. ;-) I put all of my feeders in one place for the webcam - except for my thistle feeders because the goldfinches are shy. I'm thinking of putting up a 2nd Hummzinger off camera. I'm really impressed with how well it works! The hummers are definitely spending more time at the feeders now. Since we're on the bluebird forum I should mention that I didn't ever have bluebirds nest in my yard this year. Instead I had chickadees nest twice, which is unusual. I was all ready for the blues to move in. Last year I had chickadees nest and then bluebirds came along later to use the same box. Hopefully next year! The nest box is visible in the photo further back in the yard behind the feeders. I put a camera in there and got some good videos of the chickadee nest. Hopefully next year I can get some of a bluebird nest as well!

I live near SF. The place we go for brunch on really special occasions is the top of the Mark Hopkins Hotel at the top of Nob Hill (across the street from the Fairmont Hotel). It has a great view and a wonderfully amazing brunch -- the best I've ever seen and I have travelled a lot. For drinks, lunch or dinner, I would also recommend the revolving restaurant at the top of the Hyatt Embarcadero. I have taken out of town guests there several times. I don't remember much about the food but the view is wonderful. Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge is also fun (and still free, I think) (you will need a car or cab to get there, though, and getting a cab for the ride back could be tricky). If you decide to get a car (and San Francisco is not THAT hard to drive in) I would also recommend Guaymas restaurant in Tiberon or a stroll in Sausalito (across the Golden Gate Bridge from SF). Both have great views of San Francisco and are only a short drive from SF (assuming traffic is OK across the Golden Gate).

Great capture, Nina. You never know what those hummers are going to do . . . last summer I was leaning on the deck rail, trying to witness the fledging of a bluebird nesting. Okay, so I was a little close to one of the hummer feeders . . . well, one little guy wanted me to know that I wasn't supposed to be there and he just sort of hovered in front of my face for about a minute. I could almost hear him say "excuse me, but you are not a hummingbird, so scram!" Still haven't seen any orioles at either the oriole or jelly feeders, but did have a false alarm yesterday. I had what I thought was a female oriole eating bugs in the lilac bush outside my kitchen window--only she turned out to be Mrs. Scarlet Tanager--the Mr. showed up a few minutes later but wouldn't wait around for me to grab the camera.

I never had any luck with the jelly and I know I have Orioles and the hummers come to my feeder. Maybe I should try again. You guys have the best luck with your birds! So glad you got a picture, too.

Cute! Maybe I need to add a feeder with grape jelly even though I don't have Orioles! :D
