Hi Fellow Hummingbird lovers. I am Aprille and like all of you am very fascinated by these amazing creatures. Something so magical about them. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and think from research that I've done that what I have is Anna's Hummingbirds. Anyway a few years ago I noticed a female starting to make a nest in the dip in my hummingbird feeder (it was a old bottle that someone had made into a feeder) it was later in the year and she never did lay eggs, year two she came back and I had moved the feeder so she built her nest on the L of our gutter, year tree she came back and did the same - she also laid eggs but never hatched them - all of this was toward March and always on our front porch by the door - not a good location. I think she finally realized this because this year (at least I think it's the same female) she made her nest in our back yard in the Scented Corkscrew Vine - right outside our back patio door (she really likes door ways!)well ... she laid her eggs, she hatched her eggs and we have two babies!!! I think they are roughly a bit over two weeks ... I have been lucky enough to experience this amazing thing in my life and have taken pictures which I have shared with my friends on facebook and then I remembered years ago when she first made her nest and I had questions I came here and everyone was so happy for me and so encouraging - so I wanted to share with you my beautiful guest and her young! I hope your baby hummer made a successful departure by now. If so, look around and if you hear chirping from a tree near the nest, that the baby calling its mother. FYI, there is an amazing DVD about baby hummingbirds called, "First Flight: A Mother Hummingbird's Story" You can watch whole sequence of events in beautiful close ups. Highly recommend since you, too became attached to your hummers. You will appreciate this film. Good to here someone has activity! You of course have read of my troubles with the swallows and the fact that my blues are wasting time and doing nothing. 1 TRES nest completed, 1 almost complete. This time last year I had a completed BB nest and 5 eggs. This year, not one completed BB nest and no absolute claims for the boxes. Why are they being so slow???? It's not much of a wonder why they suffer competition problems...how did they not go extinct during the decline of the 1800's? I've lost plenty of female BBs and nest attempts. Although every season got better with the exception of this year. Ahh, Time to quit rambling! Good luck! Heck, you're lucky to have them nesting! Mine are just wasting time and boring me. -Tim-

Did you mean that you used an incubator? I bought one and it has been well worth the blatantly high cost. It's just pure fun and joy to see the baby chicks hatching. I used to think baby chicks were small until I began hatching quail. Now the quail chicks hide under the baby chicks for warmth and cuddling time. At another hatching later, I had a baby chick which I had to separate out from the others, and it would hide under some adult quail. They didn't seem to mind at all. I loved the jungle fowl. They were awesome in how high they could jump and also relatively quiet for being a chicken. I figured it was the wild part of their line to be quiet in their ancestor's original habitat.
