I just watched a Redheaded (possibly woodpecker) and grey bird steal my last one week old bluebird. Has anyone ever heard of this and what do you do to protect them
Marcia is the nest built high up and close to the hole or is the hole enlarged by woodpeckers? How deep is the box? From hole to floor should be at least 6 inches. Please post your question over on the bluebird nut cafe forum, you will get many more answers to your question and advice for future nestings. Tell them I sent you :)
thank you. I did sign up and will post it tomorrow. the box is just a bluebird box from Lowe's. Had 4 babies this morning, then saw the last one taken. I'm bummed.
Bummer. Red-headed woodpeckers are so beautiful, but they are nasty to other birds. You can help protect them by making sure the nest is deep enough, and the hole is no larger than 1 1/2 inches.
