2nd Set Going Well - Will There Be More

Haven't posted since the 2nd set of babies hatched on June 2. So now they are almost a week old. I've been out of town but my dh has been feeding them waxworms a couple time a day. I checked on them this morning after feeding. It's been so hot here in the Atlanta area, and I've worried about the box getting too hot. I'm feeding the parents two or three times a day and make sure they have fresh water as well.

Anyway, here's a picture of them. In the lower corner you can see a partially opened eye and beak. They already have feathers and look like one big blob in there.

Is this it for the year? I'm not sure how much longer I can afford these worms...LOL. You all helped me out so much and I appreciate it more than I can say. Just another week with them surviving the heat and storms and that will be 7 fledged babies.

Tara..my second brood should probably fledge this weekend...just four chicks this go around...since this is my first season at bluebirding, I have no idea whether round #3 is in store...It's unseasonably hot here as well, so I know your concerns...we've just had a light shower and that should cool things nicely, at least for today...

I would love to know how many bluebirders have had the same couple nest 3 times back to back...

Do you have seven babies in the nest??? WOW..that must be some crowded nest...they may fledge early just to get a little breathing room..LOL...

Donna...I type confused *G* There are only 4 babies in the nest. There were 3 in the first set, and one egg that didn't hatch.

It would be interesting to find out about 3rd broods. These are definitely the same parents as the first brood. A third one would probably bankrupt me, but I'd manage. It's been amazing. I do hope they take a break though. They've been nesting constantly since April. It's too hot for kids!

Speaking of Explorers, I'm amazed so many Canadian roses died back to the snow line (about 1 foot.) A. Mackenzie, Prairie Joy, Quadra, Morden Centennial, Champlain, & Hope For Humanity died back like never before. We had minus 16 F in mid Michigan, which isn't that cold by Canadian standards. Even John Davis, which stayed green to the tips, is now withering the shoots on its top half. It had to be more than just the cold that did all this damage.

Well observed! The MATURED flowers, of many Hippeastrums even, create the impression of the "seamless" and "completely rounded" CALIX or PLATE and I am inclined to baptize this seedling Amarena BALLS (again, and in remembrance of a sibling of Minerva x Picotee respectively) that had been nicely veined on white, rounded segments) but lacked the red edge DESPITE parentage of "Picotee". I shall definitely try to obtain seeds of "PapMinPic through self pollination. On ther other hand, the star-shaped Melusine x PapDon2 seedlings (a second is comming soon and reveals itself in the background respectively *g*) are in my opinion dead end hybrids, because their beauty is very "formal". Their color is very good though, rather blueish.

Some installations are very sensitive to vibration problems so you have to be very careful about the washer you put in. If you have an such an installation, or you are concerned that you might have such an installation, then your best pick is one of the new hung suspension top loaders. Machines like this are the GE Harmony, the Oasis, the Cabrio, & all of Fisher & Paykel's washers. Of these, the F&P, the Oasis, & the Cabrio all have water filled balancing chambers both on the top, and on the bottom of the drum. They are the only washers on the market that have dual chambers lke this, so they are especialy suitable for sensitive installations, because most of the vibrating forces are cancelled out at the source by the chambers.

I just reread your original post, and see that you ran out of paper. So, for the back inside of the box with the water hoses, paint that in the aqua, the trim in the green. What I think you will create is a sense that those three boxes (the shelves, the water sources and the long panel) are all intentional and connected. I would also paint the round post next to the folding table in either the green or the wall color. Or for fun, you could do varying width stripes of the two colors plus leave some white stripes in between here and there. One other thing that occurred to me as I looked at the pix again. Could you move the washer to the left, so that is is lined up more with the water source box (perhaps to the left side where the trim tile and subways meet)? That would leave space between the washer and sink for the cute white wicker basket (if that stays down there) or some other basket or storage shelf on the bottom area of that long vertical panel. I think that would help make all those disparate areas seem more in line and visually related.

When those babies fledge because of the hot water they are going to fledge straight to the bird bath and go swimming.

We often have a 3rd brood here in Maryland, if everything goes right with the first 2 broods. Some people have 4, probably in the south where they have a longer season.

I'll make sure everything is ready just in case. Not sure how I'll afford to feed another set. But I'll manage if they can.

We had a storm last night but things are calm this morning. The parents gobbled up everything I offered and took it straight to the box. There don't seem to be as many robins, jays and mockingbirds around which is good. I'll probably check on the little ones again tomorrow and try to get some better shots. It won't be long til I can't peek in anymore. That's when it's really hard.

I'd go swimming to if I was the birds. In fact, I do go swimming - almost every day.

Hi all,

We just fledged 5 chicks from the second nest of Missy and Mr.B. (those baby pictures are in this thread:) They both have been bonding with our other box alot ever since about the second week of feeding the nestlings. I cleaned and remounted the NAB box they used successfully the first 2 times, and it was back up and ready about 2 hours after the 5th chick fledged. Now, they're inspecting and defending BOTH boxes!

We're very hopeful about a 3rd nest.

We have had 3 nestings here in WNC. I'm hoping for a third this year too. They are on the 2nd now and have been looking in 2 other boxes this week. They do have a ways to go though, the eggs aren't hatched yet, but due any time now. I'm not sure if they're actually looking for the next site or just defending the boxes. Wow, 4 broods! I don't think here, but maybe in Atlanta Tara! You may just be beginning!!!
