i have a new visitor of the last few days:

he is about the size of a sparrow and has a grey head, grey chest and chestnut brown backside. there is some black with white spotting on the neck area as well. i cannot find a bird that looks even close to it in Petersons Field Guide of North American birds. he frequents the feeders and is eating black-oil seeds and is a little skittish.

i am in vancouver canada. help is appreciated.

My initial thought is Dark-eyed Junco. There are several races which vary in appearance. I've linked a googled image of a likely candidate.

Another possibility, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, and another googled image to consider.

TBH, I wouldn't hate this house if I added my own furnishings. I noticed there's a trend of real estate photography where they dial the contrast way up. It makes anything with a texture look so ugly, especially wood grain. I bet this house might look a little better when seen IRL, with the wood looking more normal. I imagine it's a little shabby, but not nearly as bad as it looks in the photos. (but then again, real estate photography also has a knack for hiding flaws too, so who knows. it could go either way.)

Does anyone have a photo & description of purple rider tomato?

An internet search is not providing any hits for the heirloom tomato purple rider. Does anyone have a photo or description? Is it mid or late season harvest? approximate ounces? determinate for indeterminate? is it dark or more of a muted brown? Height? any information would be appreciated.

nope- i have the chestnut backed chickadees already and the oregon juncos.the closest bird that it looks like is the fieldfare, but the book says that they are too large for it to be one.it is a summer bird and not year round.also there is some black on the head just under the grey part of the head.
