Problem with Cardinals...Help

We have a couple of old outdoor cats who live on the deck. Their food is on the deck. The last couple of days, I have noticed a couple of cardinals, male at times and female at other times, land on the deck railing. Today, I watched the female land on the deck and then subsequently lower perches until she was on the floor in front of the sliding doors where she took a piece of the dry cat food and flew off with it.

I have a large garden and could not put up bird feeders because several neighborhood cats stay in my yard as if it is their home. Two of them have been getting on the deck lately...to the annoyance of our indoor lab who puts up a huge fuss when he sees them.

How do I avoid the intrepid cat food gathering cardinals becoming cat prey?

I put some of the cat food in a try feeder...not good but better than the floor, and moved the cats dishes. Any help out there?

I think you are in a pickle.

If you put food out someone will eat it.

The only way to prevent cats from killing birds is to keep the cats indoors.

Your other alternative is to not put the food out at all.

Or move the food to another place?

Good luck. I always vote on the birds' side in keeping cats indoors.

Simple...move the cats indoors and don't put food outside anymore. Cats don't belong outside.
