surreal nesting experience

Thats the only way to describe it. This year, for the first time, i bluebirds in the front yard ready to fledge.

I preface this by saying ive been bluebirding over 20 years, but the only success ive had have been trails i established in a park, relatives farms, etc. They've nested twice previously in my yard, only to be destroyed by HOSPs.

This year, they nested in a box 40 ft from my bedroom window. Ive never had the opportunity to observe their behavior this closely. I'm feeding them mealworms, the parents cram their beaks full to take and feed the young.

How marvelous. I'm happy for you. I have not yet been able to host them, but I do feed them. I have a pair that has been bringing their fledglings to my mealworm feeder and even that is amazing. To have them nest where you can watch them from your window must have been quite the experience.

Congratulations BUT if you do not have a sparrow spooker on that box chances are you may lose this brood to hosps before they fledge. There are many ways to deal with hosps. Have you ever been to the sialis website we all talk about? Everything you need to know about Blues and hosps is there. I lost one nest to hosps the first year I put up a box and then found sialis and haven't lost a nest since.

^^^^Mine, too. It's their insidious little chicken-y plot to create and brood a clutch of eggs. :) I have both individual nests--which sometimes means that when the Head Hen wants to lay, she boots another hen, lower on the pecking order ladder, OUT--and a larger, unintentional nest in the rabbit hutch. The girls have decided to squeeze their big fluffy butts into the poor rabbits' enclosed 'house' part of her hutch, which has a layer of alfalfa hay in it, to lay eggs. While more than one hen at a time goes in the rabbit hutch, they seem to wait their turn and all lay their eggs in the far back corner--no other nests are even made in there. That might change if it was larger, though--the rabbit hutch nest area is only about 2 feet square. If you do this, please post here to let us know how it works, I'm curious! :) Velvet ~:>

With real estate, it often comes down to location, location, location. So I have heard. Some years ago, I did landscape maintenance work for a housing development. The gardens of the 5-6 model homes were kept in prime condition to encourage sales, so I worked there often. A (dim-witted?) Anna's hummingbird decided to make a nest in the potted tree at the entrance to the last model. That would have been fine, except she was very protective of her nest and would angrily buzz and swoop every potential customer that came near! (And me too, but at least I was aware of the nest!) Because almost all of the visitors were there for the first time, there were many, many surprised victims all day long. I would try to warn the customers when I was working in the area, because the sales people never seemed to, but it was an impossible task. More often I would just hear startled shrieks throughout the day. There had to have been a steady stream of customers while she was constructing the nest, so I cannot guess why she thought it was a good location. Other than the abundant amount of flowers. Silly bird. But she did manage to fledge her young, and did not return the following year. I imagine her stress level must have been off the charts. Even for a hyper-hummingbird.

Does anybody have experience with owl nesting boxes?

I got one built by a good friend of mine after hearing an owl hoot in Fall a few years ago. We downloaded the plans from the web and used cedar to build the box. He mounted it ~20ft up on a PVC pipe and tethered the pole between a pine and a mulberry. Except that the owl never showed up-actually I haven't heard it again. But in the meantime, gray squirrels enlarged the hole and moved in. They have been living there ever since. I figured it is giving shelter to some creature especially in brutal winters such as this one and let it be. Squirrels are quite smart and will take advantage of any structures given half a chance. Mounting your box away from trees and securing it to a wooden pole covered by a smooth PVC pipe/sleeve might do the trick.

I'm sorry it wasn't for you. It is not a one size fits all. Which would be boring if we all liked the same. Often when we completely turn old equipment off or unplug older things they stop working when we plug in or start things up again. Hence asking if the directions for installation was followed. It is often because the part that breaks is worn out but as the status quo it functions fine, but if it is changed such as a short burst of a higher current can trigger a break down. Kind of like when you are walking around you don't feel as stiff, but if you sit for a long period of time in the same position you can feel stiff when you first start to move. I don't go online per se, I use the app. Yes it communicates over the net, but doesn't actually need a browser or pc to access. If I'm home and not in bed I can just go over and adjust the temperature like any other thermostat. You can program it like a regular programmable thermostat or you can let it learn your patterns and program itself. I like being able to turn it on from elsewhere as we use the auto away feature and if it is av really hot day or cold I like turning it on when I leave work which may or may not be on a schedule which was an issue with our old thermostat. It was either running too early or not early enough. It also does a better job at switching between heat and AC than our old one did. Important where I live as temps can drop 30 degrees in a matter of 10 minutes when a cold front moves in. It is so nice that it switches with fewer degree difference than our old very expensive best at that time thermostat which never did a good job with that. Yes, aware of the sialis site and the sparrow spookers, haven't tried that. I do use the Van Ert traps on the houses, and also an ST-1 cage trap - ive been fairly aggressive in controlling them. What happened in years past i would travel for my job, be gone a week, and come home to find the nest destroyed. So far the blues have been aggressive in chasing any marauders.

Do you think installing a spooker at this point might spook the bluebirds? The young are around 10 days old.

No it will not spook the blues - they are tightly bonded to the nestbox, please put the spooker up now. I put mine up (though I should know better) when the babies were about 5 days old. The bluebirds couldn't care less about it. Ideally you should put it up as soon as an egg is laid but anytime after that is fine. Now GO!!!! Wishing you success.

I hope you can protect this nesting... there is truly nothing like having them where you can watch often. It is one of the joys of my life now...cannot imagine why so few people do the few things necessary to have them..... Hope you get to see when they fledge... its so rewarding... keep us posted!

I too lost a set of 5 eggs and the Bluebird mom to a treacherous HOSP.It was devastating.I trapped and disposed off the culprit within an hour; but that did not bring my Blebird mom back.I felt so guilty.I then started to take the spooker principle seriously.I have not lost another Bluebird in the last 10yrs.
