Hail

I spent part of yesterday afternoon sitting with my binoculars, watching the swallows trying to tease their babies out of the nestbox. When I left off they had not fledged. An hour later we had the most terrific hailstorm -now I'm hoping those babies stayed put in their nice wooden house. Shoot, it was scary.

Hopefully, they fledged safely (or didn't) or will fledge safely today. Hail can be devastating. A friend of mine in Kansas wrote me today: "Hailstones the size of softballs have killed livestock and pets here. I run for the basement when the hail hits." Birds don't have that option, but hopefully some will find a cavity to retreat, to or a branch or something to hide under.
(Keeping my fingers crossed for your TRES. I've often seen cavity nesters fledge shortly before a bad storm--you worry about them! What ARE they THINKING?!?)

They are still in the nestbox, thank goodness. I took some shots of their little faces at the window this morning. I'll probably miss it as usual, but I'm sure glad they are ok.

Sander, You got off lightly, we had a bad hail storm last October, all of my Broms lived outside and were stripped to threads. Thankfully six or so months on, it is just a bad memory, they really are very hard to kill. Rick

I would have posted a pic of the hail piled up in my window box, but yesterday was the Sabbath, and one cannot take pictures or use the computer on the Sabbath. But if you imagine overturning a bunch of paper cups of Coke with ice over on my window box, you'd get the idea of how it looked. Went out on the balcony today and fortunately, saw no hail damage. Still worried about no pips from Ripple Effect, Paisley Print, Cameo, Grand Prize, Dinner Mint, Smiling Sailor and a couple more. Paradise Island sent up 1 pip last week, but it seems in stasis; has not grown more, nor have any additional pips emerged in the pot. Could this have to do with the low temps we've been having? In the 60s/day and 40s/night?

We've had to have a new roof put on every 10 years because of the hail damage in our area. Hail the size you show is pretty scary for pasture animals with no shelter. Not a fit thing for man nor beast...........I love your red Amaryllis and always like lilies, although the lilies don't fare too well in our climate as perennials.............Maryl

Goodness gracious. I'm not sure if an expensively thick vinyl (even better than 0.042") could withstand that size of hail. Looks like a metal roof too, and I'd hate to see any cars.
