Will the ducks come back?

Iwas getting ready to take my son to the park earlier and noticed a pair of mallards hanging out in my yard. As you can imagine I was pretty excited.

I just left out an old tray feeder filled with cracked corn and set it on the ground. This is the first time Ive ever seen ducks in my yard. I have a nice sized yard. Is there a good chance theyll return?

Well.....probably not, unless you have a fairly big pond.
I've had them several times in my yard, but it was just for a day or 2. They are pretty, aren't they?

Like catherinet, I've had mallards visit my yard, but they didn't stay for long. It was great to see them though.

A pair visited in April, 2012.

I just realized that was almost exactly two years ago. The grass was a whole lot greener that April (we've had a very late spring this year).

Update...the female runner was taken by a coyote about 3 weeks ago. My husband has finally fenced the yard! Now down to the male Indian Runner and the female Rouen (who is setting on a clutch of 17 eggs in a new and safer spot) The eggs I brought in to incubate was doing great at 16 days until my pre-school moved the heat lamp. Sadly, I think they all died. It was 110F and I see no more movement or much progress (but can still see the blood veins)

They do use lead, regardless of laws. Rehabbers deal with this regularly. But Wood ducks are not divers or grazers (like Canada geese), so not sure from what source the lead would come. Possible she was poisoned? Or shot, and made it back to the nest? I don't think sparrows would/could kill even a little duck like a Wood duck. Sad to find that. Dirtgirl, may I make a suggestion, though? I say this every spring and summer, and people hate me for it, but I know you will not. I do not think it's ever a good idea to check bird nests that are accessible to predators, or that do not need to be maintained (like bluebirds). I know there was no indication of traumatic injury (like you would with a raccoon attack), but visiting nests regularly leaves a scent trail for mammal predators (like raccoons and even squirrels) and crows watch and figure out something is doing in there. And I am not at all suggesting that's what happened, but you know your stuff, and I know people will probably follow your example more than mine : ) Anyway, happy spring, and good luck with the W. ducks this year.

Well, I'm going to have to read up on Orioles, and Phoebes too. Wow Lindac, a buzzard! Marlingardener, I'm happy to give your ducks a home during the summer months. It's good to share, you know! No hummers here yet, but they should remember me, so I'm hoping they show up soon. I'm very faithful to put out fresh food for them, even though I haven't planted their garden. I'm just barely moving myself after the winter we've had, and feel a little behind the times. Blueiris, I named ours Henry and Henrietta long ago. They're very comfortable dropping in (literally) and leaving again. It's always a pleasure. Oh wow. I just saw one of the little owls on the owl cam devour a small bunny, the entire hind quarters in three gulps. YIKES.

I think TWP is fine product. I know of several wood resto guys that I respect very much and they speak highly of it. I refrain from making too many comments for two reasons.. 1) I have limited experience with it so I am not qualified to advise on it longevity or compare it to other products. 2) I have other products I have found that give me better one coat coverage and last a bit longer. These are not really available to the public so if I had to choose a product that is sold retail I would choose Ready Seal or TWP. If you have been satisfied with the SD in the past and you are certain the formulation is the same (ie has not been reformulated to meet new VOC standards) go with it. I feel your pain about the sanding. Acrylics are a nightmare. You could have removed the product you are talking about with a contractor grade stripper but even then, it takes finesse and experience. As far as post-sanding cleaning, the RAD system would be advisable because the oxygenating action would lift remaining dirt and dust, kill any mold spores in the wood and the brightening stage would set the wood up with proper pH to hold a penetrating sealer better. If you have gone this far, I wouldn't leave anything to chance.

Last spring, a pair of mallards was coming every day several times a day to feed under my bird feeder - they were picking fallen seeds and corn on the ground. Sometimes, the male would come alone, but mostly he would show up with his lady (or ladies?). We were joking with my husband that he is bringing his women to this Ã¢ÂÂfancy restaurantÃ¢ÂÂ for dinner to impress them. Closer to the summer time, the male started to come alone (probably, his wife was on the nest already) and later he disappeared too - I guess, when ducklings hatched, they became too busy and stopped their fancy dinner outings.

Might be back. I live about a block from a pond and mallards have nested under various evergreens in the neighborhood throughout the years.

For the last few years my brother has had a pair of ducks come to his back yard and hang out in the water that accumulates on his pool cover. They stay for a couple of weeks. I think it's been 4 or 5 years now! He assumes they're the same ducks (how to tell?) The female gets so used to the family that last year she followed my niece right into the kitchen!
