Question about parent blues?

Our baby blues are 14 days old today, for the last couple of days mom has been feeding them constantly as early as 5:30 a.m. and dad is on the wire also....but they're not feeding them the mealworms I put out they go off for food. Then tonight I noticed mom didn't go into the nest this evening, so my question is Daddy blue doesn't stay in the nest in the eve but does mom stop staying in the nest now that they are older?

Not much room for Mom now and they will be leaving the box in a few days. They can regulate their own temps now so Mom does not need to be in there. Be on the lookout for peeking soon 3-5 days. Have the camera ready and take the week off! ; )

Oh soo right lisa! I wasn't going to try to watch the fledging.. I just happen to see one sticking out pretty far. Ran and got the camera and within the hour I saw three taking their first flight... it still makes me weepy! I got tons of pics with babies in and out, on the ledge, then just a few with flying out.. it's so well worth the time you may spend. I had work screaming to be done and I wouldn't change a thing..

OK, now I'm getting confused. Caryopteris x clandonensis (Dark Knight, Longwood Blue etc) is more of a woody sub-shrub, leaves a framework over winter. Mine, including the gold leaf variety, will self sow occasionally but much quicker from cuttings. They aren't going to bloom first year. Caryopteris divaricata is an herbaceous perennial in my garden, dies back to the ground every year. Mine is Snow Fairy, and I haven't grown it from seed because it hasn't bloomed in the three years since I bought it - my summer may not be warm enough is my guess - and I grow it as a variegated foliage plant. Now Eupatorium coelestinum...totally different altogether, also known by a few 'mist' common names.

Pacific shore juniper looks nicer than blue rug, and it grows faster. My pacific shore junipers looks great year round and I've yet to have any pest or disease problems with it. It spreads at a nice pace but I haven't found it to be hard to control at all. I had about half a dozen blue rug junipers growing on a sunny slope at the front of our property and I'd swear that in all the time they were there they didn't grow an inch...very sloooow grower for me. Besides that, I found the name to be deceptive - it never really looked 'blue' when I had it. Most of the time it was a dull green mixed in with dead brown branches from spider mite infestations. That's just my own experience with the plant - maybe you'll have better luck. I finally got rid of them, and now I have a xeric bed planted in that spot.

Thanks for your reply TamaraTomNC! Glad to hear you are happy with your Platnium :) Do you bake much? I know you said that you haven't used it too much but have you found the newer oven power burner to be as awesome as Blue Stars website would suggest? Have you found the small oven small, or a nice useful size? I totally agree that having a slightly smaller one when I don't need the full oven would be nice. I haven't seen a Blue Star 48" in about a year. The appliance store that sells them in Winnipeg only had a 36". They had a 48" Wolf and the small oven was quite small I thought. It didn't fit a standard residential sized cookie sheet. I imagin I wouldn't bake cookies in the small oven but I was just using that as a size reference. Someone on another forum recommended Capital.. Anyone who would like to compare the Blue Star to Capital for me? Price? The Capital sure looks a little prettier online, a little less utilitarian, but still high BTUs.

Oof, not an easy question. I'll give it a shot. "Bluish" plants aren't really blue, they'd still feast on the 400 to 700 nanometer wavelength, except they have more of the non-chrolophyll, light-absorbing pigments than do green plants. These accessory pigments harvest green light so plants that have more of them will look less green. It does not necessarily mean they will only use shorter wavelength radiation (blue end of the spectrum), just that they will use more than green plants. Also, even green plants still use some green light because they also have these accessory pigments. I think your purple LED grow light will work fine. I'd just keep an eye on it and watch for stress signs. Alternatively, you can use that bulb on something else and get the full-spectrum LED for your Pilo instead, something in the 7000 K to 10kK range. As long as you're curious (I've slid down that rabbit hole too), look up photosynthetically active radiation. Fun stuff!

thanks for your info I go out to the box everyday and peek at them they were bright eyed this evening, I can't wait to watch them fledge.... I missed my first fledging last yr. so this will be special this is only my second yr with my blues but I had a late start last yr. I use to live in town and now being out in the country there is so much to enjoy and I do so enjoy these beautiful birds.
