Three of our six nest boxes have been claimed by mountain bluebirds this spring. I am putting out the bird bath today.

Check out the photos at http://www.ocdgardener.com/?p=286 .

Cool that you got Bluebirds to move in but your boxes are not properly mounted. Your nestboxes are perfect examples of a happy meal for a racoon! Nestboxes should be mounted on slick metal poles (conduit) with a predator baffle. Boxes mounted on fence posts or other wooden posts make easy targets for racoons, squirrels and cats not to mention mice and other vermin to get at the eggs/babies and adults. I sure hope your Blues stay safe, I learned the hard way to listen to the wisdom of those that have btdt and now have all my boxes on conduit. Good luck!

It was like digging up a big tuber. That surprised me too. Came out of the ground very easy. I'm no weakling-but for tall and skinny that plant weighed more than it looks. Another surprise? Not a leaf has wilted since being replanted in full sun. Tough plants. I guess from what I have read they only hate very cold and very hot. In years past the fruits were so big on those skinny stems they would snap in winter storms. Winter is when they seem to ripen. Just too late to get the very best flavor also. Maybe, the new sunnier spot will change that.

I am still new at this whole protecting our bb houses, I have learned the hard way twice and now IM coming here for some great advice, which I am getting and you will also. I thought someone told me that if you clean the bb nest out after fledging to leave it open for awhile. Mama bb will be busy with her baby's. IM not really sure but I do think this was suggested to me? If not someone will set you straight soon. Congrats on the six fledglings, that is huge!! After watching video of wrens and sparrows raiding and killing bb's IM pissed and ready to rip their little heads off. (oh my) LOL good luck.

It doesn't appear to be a bunting......................no dark on it whatsoever, just a beautiful solid blue. I wish I could capture a picture of it at the feeder, but any type of movement and he is gone. I have been trying for a couple of weeks now.
