Mountain Bluebirds Moving In

Three of our six nest boxes have been claimed by mountain bluebirds this spring. I am putting out the bird bath today.

Cool that you got Bluebirds to move in but your boxes are not properly mounted. Your nestboxes are perfect examples of a happy meal for a racoon! Nestboxes should be mounted on slick metal poles (conduit) with a predator baffle. Boxes mounted on fence posts or other wooden posts make easy targets for racoons, squirrels and cats not to mention mice and other vermin to get at the eggs/babies and adults. I sure hope your Blues stay safe, I learned the hard way to listen to the wisdom of those that have btdt and now have all my boxes on conduit. Good luck!

Good to actually hear Mountain Bluebirds nesting! I wish I lived out west and could help the other 2 species out. The Eastern has come back very well. I agree with Kendra. get something behind the window or ON it to either break the reflection or make the window more obvious. ~Tim~

Yes its very possible to see a mountain bluebird in NY. There was a female on cape cod two years ago. Call local bird club they will seen birders there to make sure the bird is really a mountain. That is a very rare fine. Once word gets out people from all over will stop by to check the bird out. Enjoy. They show up every few years in New England.

Now with the snow storm on the way it will be impossible to find our western friend. Bluebirds avoid snow pack and hold up in the harshest of winter weather the bird probably will move on. (lets hope) to a warmer area. She is in one of the warmest area's in New England granted there are no major ocean storms. And no ice.

for the last 5 years I've had a single mountain bluebird hanging out. he's definitely way out of his territory. I expect he'll be around until he passes Also-how does one find the gardening topic index these days. the only way I've succeeded is to search a specific topic. EX.: today I searched garden web bluebird forum.
