Female not laying eggs

Can't figure out why after 2 weeks or more of having a complete nest that the female has not laid any eggs. We see them often and know they go in and out of the nest but that seems to be it...no sign of any egg laying. Does anyone know what could be the problem? thanks.

I had that happen once and was told by more experienced Bluebirders that it may have to do with her being young. They had told me that a first year female may take longer. I would also ask if they have a second nest anywhere nearby? Sometimes they do build two complete nests and then take their time deciding which to actually lay in.

thanks for your reply and I will remember that and keep a watch on them to see what they do. I keep hoping that we will have some results.

It is a very common problem. Are they penned at nights? If so, make sure not to release them until at least two hours after daybreak, by which time the duck will almost certainly have laid - probably in a corner of the shed. If they are not shedded and they spend the night on the pond, then it sems she is just laying where she is rather than leave her companions. You probably need to pen them to get any eggs. Despite many years' exerience and a few hundred ducks, I have never had any success in getting ducks to lay in a box. Tens of thousands of hens yes, but ducks, no. It is likely to be the Rouen, because a pure mallard would not normally be laying eggs at this time of year. Old McDonald.

That is a lovely picture. I haven't seen a newt in my pond for a long time.(well since making the last pond) I guess they could be in there but I haven't seen any. Saying that, I have a silver ghostKoi that I have only seen twice in the last 3 years. He is now completely black and not silver anywhere so is very difficult to see. I was shocked when I saw him last year as I had presumed something had taken him. I couldn't get over this strange black fish that suddenly appeared one day.
