The aphids must not like the residual hexachlorobenzene and other inert ingredients the manufacturers don't have to disclose.

Understanding that Daconil is a preventative and NOT a cure, the spray schedule should be as listed on the label instructions.

Yes I know - that's why I started it - I don't have LB- as far as I know. If I did my garden would be decimated already. As far as I know LB has not hit NY County which is NYC proper

Label instructions last time I read them was 7 days. But there is little difference in 5 or 7 days so do whichever you wish.

I actually think I found a couple of late blight leaves on my plants - not for sure but it hasn't spread to the entire plant.

If you already have it then the Daconil isn't going to cure it (that was my point). If you don't, then it will help prevent it.

I had been spraying with Serenade for the past month + so maybe that helped and the initial application of Daconil last week.

Serenade gets good reviews in all the discussions here about it. Just search 'Serenade' to review them.

I must say I wish I knew the Danconil helped get rid of the Aphids. They have been a huge problem for me.

Daconil isn't noted or recommended as an aphid control. The disappearance of the aphids could be due to many things, including as mulio said, a secondary side effect of the hexachlor. Or it could just as easily be coincidence. But aphids don't "infect" plants per se and aren't responsible for the spread of late blight.

I think all of this is covered in your previous post though so you could have just added any further questions to that one, right?

mulio- I dont get it. If it (hcb) has been banned (in 1966) as your link stated then how is it in Daconil?

Liz, I think you saw in a post here by Mark Korney that Serenade, with direct challenge, had only a 4% preventive result whereas Daconil had a 98% result.

There is nothing set in stone as to how often you spray b'c it depends on the weather.

Rain washes off the Daconil, you spray again. With no rain I'd go for 5 days if you know that Late Blight is anywheres near you and it is, on LI and Westchester Co and Sullivan and others.

If you have bacterial foliage diseases then alternate with a copper spray.

There's not much more I can say other than what Dave and others here have shared with you, b'c you've started or participated in several Late Blight threads here now.

Good question Joe.

HCB as an "end use product" was banned. There is a global effort to ban any use as it is one of the major world persistant organic pollutants.

HCB in Daconil is residual left over from the manufacturing of chlorothanonil. Technically, it is not in there for "end use" and as such does not have to be listed in the labeling.

Manufacturers are allowed to put all kinds of toxic materials in products as long as those wastes are not for "end use". This is due to a law passed in the 80's which helped manufacturers defray the costs of proper disposal or toxic leftover products in manufacturing.

Heavy metals for instance are added to fertilizers in small amounts to get rid of them. Since they aren't being claimed for "end use" this is considered "OK". Some states require that companies disclose the amounts in the fertilizers.

Kind of interesting that one of the main uses of HCB in the past was as a fungicide. The govt records actually list its last "end use" sales as a fungicide as 1984.

I found it interesting that it got rid of the aphids and I do not think it is a coincidence at all. I did research after the disappearance of the aphids and I saw read something in it has an effect on soft bodied insects. Sorry you find my threads tedious.

Didn't say they were tedious Liz, just redundant and unclear. Since you didn't seem to appreciate the initial responses you got and since we all know this has already been discussed in detail in other posts, I assumed we must be missing the point of your question.

Carolyn has posted on her spraying schedule, as have several others of us, numerous times in the many previous Daconil and late blight discussions so a quick review of them would have answered your question. And, as she reiterated again above, it all depends on the weather.

But as already mentioned and as many of us post here regularly, the use of chemical sprays should follow the instructions on the label (after rain is mentioned on the label).

And using Daconil to kill aphids, if indeed it does, is overkill in both $$ and safety.

So, as the forum guidelines suggest, all of this could have been discussed in detail on your existing thread (linked above) rather than starting another new one.

At any rate I'm glad you got the information you apparently needed.
