lewis's woodpeckers

i have had a pair of Lewis's woodpeckers close by for several months and both would come at same times to eat seeds and nuts. but recent weeks i only see one at a time.

and they both fly back into a patch on trees on private land. I think they are nesting there it is too early here for most insects because we are still getting freezes most nights. but i guess they are making do mostly with the birdseed and nuts and raisens ect.

So lucky! I used to see them when we lived in Durango, CO, back in the early 1980s

I've never seen one of those before! I didn't know they liked fruits so much, so I'll have to put some out for mine. I mostly get downy, red-headed, pileated, and hairy.

i live in southwest colorado and had more Lewis's around this spring than ever before. I talk to several local dedicated birders on a regular basis and they tell me that the favorite habitat for the Lewis's are burn areas from forest fires or controlled burns. we have had too many fires in this area the last few years. There are lots of beetles and bugs and insects and worms ect. that make for a real feast for the woodpeckers. Could there have beeen lots of burn areas around Ontario in recent years?
