Hopefully this year

Hello everyone,

Had first visit by male BB and female BB on May 15 and both were really checking out my box all day long. Nothing inside box after they left around 7:00 pm. Today they both have been back and it appears the female has placed just a few pieces of grass inside box. They tend to leave for close to an hour during stretches. Does this sound promising or am I getting my hopes up too much??

While there are never any guarantees, it sure sounds hopeful to me.

Well well, today on May 17 the female was busy shuttling nesting material back and forth in the morning. Papa was also busy supervising and guarding Mama. Weather was rainy and gray. They took a break for quite awhile after noon and saw them again after dinner when Mama had a few more beakfulls of grass.
So excited but know there are unpredictable.
Nest building seems real slow but still a newbie at this. Do BB stop building a nest and move on or does this sound promising?

Toofast, I'm over to the other side of London,Ontario, so not so far from you and our winters are much the same. I don't run the main pumps over winter, I'm wary of ice dams being created and water being diverted away from the pond. I shut the waterfall and statuary pumps off for the winter, but, because of where my bottom drain sump is located,I run a small 500 GPH pump all winter to circulate the pond water and create a vent opening in the ice. The 500 GPH pump is located in the 50 gallon bottom drain sump, and pumps water through a 1/2" hose to the pond, where it keeps the surface water moving and allows for gas exchange. I have a 1200 watt deicer as a stand by in case of pump failure. I also totally cover my ponds over, first with a leaf net for a month or so, then with a translucent tarpaulin supported on a frame, for the winter months. That keeps the cold winds from blowing across the water surface. Your plan to use an aerator and a small deicer, with your large wattage deicer as a stand-by sounds great to me. As far as keeping your pump in a bucket of water, there is no need to do that, as mag pumps,unlike oil filled pumps do not have seals that will crack, if they are allowed to dry up over winter. But that is up to you. March would be a tad too early for start up,I should think. I push the envelope a bit by getting going at the beginning of April. And that is dependent on weather conditions. The main clean out the pond, I do in the Fall, rather than in the Spring. That way I'm not stirring up the "nasties" from the bottom of the pond, when the fish are still very susceptible to disease after going through a hard winter. You mention a check valve "sticking out of the water". As long as it is not filled with water, that could freeze and cause the valve to split open, it should be okay. If you could remove it and take it apart for cleaning and then store it, that would be a safer solution. Check valves should be cleaned out at least once a year, as the are a real collector of gunk and that can cause them to stick open or closed. The same goes for your pump. Take the impeller cover off and clean it out before storing for winter, whether it is kept in water or not. The gunk inside the pump can [and will] set up like cement over winter and cause the pump to overheat and possibly burn out when you try to use it next Spring. Hope this helps. "Horton"

A few more pictures.... I realized this morning (finally a bit of light rain - but it kept me indoors....) that I hadn't recently looked at the changes from removing the pine tree and oak tree branches (and removing the ash tree/re-sodding the lawn) from the indoor viewing points of the living room and office windows. So I looked out and was rather surprised by a few things! The Wolf Eyes dogwood tree we planted near the NW corner a few years ago is now very visible from the LR; there seems to be a cardinal's nest down there in a shrub under the pine as there is a cardinal male flying in and out regularly; the additional light is helping flowering plants a lot I think. It sounds promising! Have your spooker ready for that first egg!! It's usually a few days afterthe nest is done. Check the sialis site for a time table. I have one pinned to my task bar! Sooner or later all those days for each activity will sink in!!

Thanks for the replies. May 18 and they are still building. Just checked the box and the nest is getting bigger. I did order a sparrow spooker from sparrowtraps.net. Hope it gets here soon.

Hello everyone

Just an update, its May 20 and both male and female still around. Female has been building the nest and it really looks ready.
I have noticed both appearing to be mating over last couple of days. Is that a sign the she may be close to laying?
Sparrow spooker should be here by Saturday. I also have 1000 live mealworms in container for breeding. Boy this is a learning experience!!

What part of the country are you in? I'm in Pa and still hoping to get some bluebirds. I raised a bunch of worms in hope of some coming but not yet. At least I can still have hope if you are just getting some, Last year i got some in July, hoping that they would come back earlier. I don't know why they were so late. Good Luck, sounds promising to me!!!

Gibby, I am in Northeast Ohio close to Cleveland. Saw the first BB a couple of weeks ago but they really showed an interest in my box on May 15. Wish you luck in getting them soon.

I am NW Pa north of Pittsburgh, so we aren't that far apart, I saw a bird looking into the hole of another house today, so maybe....definately have tree swallows in one box. Thanks and keep us posted! I hope I get some I have all these worms!!!!!!!

Its now May 22 and it appears the female has stopped nestbuilding and both are feeding heavily. The wife told me that both chased off a chickadee who was investigating the nestbox hole. Hopefully egg laying soon.
