Little yellow Texas bird

This guy visited my Houston area bird bath a couple times Sunday. I was wondering if anyone can identify it.

looks just like the goldfinches that i'm getting here. they are eating me out of thistle seed and boss

I would love to have some of your pepper seed. I have been looking for Texas Birdeye seed for years. I have some hot pepper seed from Mexico that a friend brought to me and I do not know the name of them. They are over an inch long and a little bigger around than a pencil. What a great family activity - I hope you are able to continue your checklist. Since you are in Central Tx, you may have seen a Golden-fronted woodpecker. The males have the red spot you describe. Good find, if that is your bird. Perhaps others will have another possibility... Candy

Bravo! Beautiful photos, rcnaylor. My family used to live in Austin (some still do) and the Hill Country is so beautiful. Do you know the common name for the cactus...is it prickly pear? I think the botanical name is Opuntia something? We have one that we found in our lawn and my husband kept mowing over it. We finally transplanted it and it has bloomed last year and this year. Go and buy him a Thistle (Nyjer) sock! He loves to eat that seed!! Isn't he pretty? His wife will be an drabber olive green/tan color. Found a shot online that shows them side by side.
