NEW: 4th Annual Rare/Unusual/Named Variety Seed Exchange

Julie

Hi there!

I would like to welcome you to the 4th Annual Rare/Unusual/Named Variety seed exchange!

This is an exchange for named variety, rare or unusual seeds whether they are annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, trees- any kind of seed will do, hand collected- or commercial- as long as it meets the criteria of named variety, rare or unusual seed.

Every one is welcome to join! This is not just for "Newbies" or "Old Hands"- it is for anyone wishing to participate!

You can send as many seed packs as you like- but only 5 packs of each specific seed please. That way we can have a larger diversity of seeds to exchange. You will receive back as many packs as you sent in- and I will try to find a bonus from my seed stash for each of you!

Just for clarification-

A named variety is a cultivar of a particular type of plant such as- Gaillardia FanfareÂ. Gaillardia is the name of the plant, and ÂFanfare is the variety. Another example would be - Black Eyed Susan - Rudbeckia hirta ÂPrairie SunÂ. Rudbeckia hirta is the Latin name of the plant- ÂPrairie Sun is the variety- Black Eyed Susan is the common name, hirta is not a variety name. The color of the plant is usually not the variety name.

I figure the general amount of seed in each packet should be close to 6-12 for large seeds, 24 or so for the usual size and a nice healthy pinch of the tiny seed. If you are feeling generous- go right ahead- and know that your seeds will be well appreciated! Generosity has itÂs own rewards!!

Understanding rare seed is just that- rare and hard to find- the amounts may vary than the suggestions listed above- but please try to send the amount of seed you would like to receive. We all like to feel as good about the giving as the receiving.

I would ask that if you send mostly veggies in- be prepared to receive mostly veggies back. Not every one is open to trading their flowers for vegetables. I can not absorb 100Âs of veggie seed packets myself but I will do my best to be fair. Also, if there are seeds sent in that do not fit the requirement such as "yellow marigolds", (unknown) "Ornamental Grass" with no other name given, or "sweet" corn- I will need to return those to the sender. Somebody somewhere will LOVE those seeds- I have a few of those "no names" myself, to share and to grow, but they do not belong in this exchange.

If you are interested, please post below by November 24th. I will send you an E-Mail through your GW Page- with info you may need- and where to send your seeds.

Individually packaged and labeled trade ready seeds should be sent in a sturdy bubble mailer with your GW name on the outside of it, to me by November 30th with:

1) return postage equal to what it cost you to send, a return address label, and if you wish, postage to cover a confirmation slip upon returning to you.

2) a list of things you would like or are interested in, or a copy of your want list from your trade page, what ever is easier-

Please know- I will make every effort to find your wants if the seeds are available!

And- well- now that finding folks wants has been mentioned, I would like to ask you, if you can find the time or have the willingness to look through the others wish lists to see if you can fill someoneÂs wishes with your seed offerings, that would be most appreciated!

It is also very much appreciated when you identify who the packet of seeds should go to, without writing their name on the packet if at all possible. Placing multiple packets into separate baggies with the intended named on the outer bag- or taping packets to another small sheet of paper with the name on the paper- or paper slips inside the clear baggies- are all very effective ways to identify to whom the seeds should go to- without actually writing the name on the packet.

I ask that the name not be put on the packet in the event that I can not send the seeds to the intended. If some one who sent in 20 packets asked for say Gaillardia Fanfare- and 10 people sent in packets for that person- I would not want to send them all 10 Gaillardia Fanfare packets back. I would want to send them 20+ different packets, one of them being Gaillardia Fanfare. This way- no one will think they have gotten seeds they shouldnÂt have-

I hope to have all your new seeds back to you in January 2008, after the holiday rush. This will give me time to sort for everyone- and avoid the Holiday Mail rush!

If you have any questions at all- please let me know-

Thanks for looking, and hereÂs to a great swap!!

Julie

OK, I think I have some things in my seed box that qualify as unusual, and I'd like to join!

    Knautia - any
    Echinacea paradoxa - yellow coneflower
    Bronze Fennel
    Plectranthus Silver Shield
    Lemon Fluff
    Verbena "Imagination"
ANYTHING *scented* Chocolate or spicy/clove mmmmmm...
Toadflax - Northern Lights - must... have... more!
    Agastache Purple Pygmy
    Hyssop officinalis - true hyssop
Salvia - any true Blue - Cambridge Blue would be nice! (I have blue bedder)
Million Bells - aka Calibrachoa/miniature petunia

For anybody in the other swaps I'm in (the Fall Harvest Fresh Seed Swap, the Big One Time Seed Trade, and the Wintersowing seed swap), the list may look familiar because I haven't received any seeds back from these swaps yet. So if you know I'm getting any of these, please just let Julie know so she can give any of those seeds to others; I don't need lots of any one kind (okay, except maybe the toadflax ;-)... )

Looking forward to an email with mailing information; I want to get this out before Thursday's chaos begins. Thanks!

I know you may have just mailed. PLMK. Thank you, mkruby7 RE: UPDATE: 2nd annual Named/Rare/Unusual Seed swap!! Posted by: jcpyburn z7b (My Page) on Wed, Nov 2, 05 at 15:38 Hello everyone, Sorry for the delay in posting! I had every intention of posting an update yesterday and I just didn't get around to it! I have been away from my computer over the weekend and monday due to some personal situations so I haven't really been able to post. I have received packages from these people: Julie\_MN Scouttiegirl Michelle S in wisconsin(not sure of GW name haven't looked it up yet!) eln2002meyer Tonysarver esiuol garden\_witch Raney10 Patricia W. in california (See above note!) Karen B from indiana barbamaman Margaret6a Patty b in ohio (see above) Romando Fgilles Toni E in california (SA) UncleWindy Whew ok so far that is 17 so far not counting the mail today which has not come yet. I may have listed your GW name as being received before and may only have your name and state listed above but I am going through and visually checking envelopes and some don't have their GW name in them and I don't have my list to match it up handy. I will post if I can't figure out someone's Gw name. I will be starting to work on these on Friday and I hope to get them out by the middle of next week. I will continue to update on whose seeds I have recieved daily so that everyone knows. If your seeds are on the way and are going to be cutting it close please let me know at least that they are on the way. ALL SEEDS SHOULD HAVE ALREADY BEEN MAILED OUT TO GET HERE ON TIME!! Unless of course you want to send them priority but that is up to you! Thanks again for all the participation! There are some great seeds in here and I think everyone will be happy! Thanks Carly

Once you e-mail me- I should be able to get your address and send you the note with my address and other information. You may want to put your E-mail address in your note to me just to be sure I can get this important information to you- Thanks-

Say- I received 2 envelopes on Saturday! One from Poison Dart Frog- Very cute packaging! I knew who it was from the minute I saw it! Frogs ALL over it! And the other from Purple Acres- all gold and shiny! The envelopes were great- but not as good as the seeds enclosed- Nice selections from you both!
I received 2 envelopes today too- Both from Drippy! One filled to the brim with hand selected seeds for folks- and the other feels very full- and full of wonders too I'll bet!

Thank you all who have joined in this exchange- for all of the kindness shared here by finding things sure to please each other both by hand selecting for folks- and the thoughtful selections in the general mix as well!

Y'know, I could have sworn I checked my post before I hit submit and I could have sworn I indicated that the list I had above was my wish list, but that part is obviously not there now; I know I did a lot of editing before I was done, but jeepers! D-:=

The list above is my wish list, not what I'm submitting!

    Let me try again, please?

    I'd really like:

    Knautia - any
    Echinacea paradoxa - yellow coneflower
    Bronze Fennel
    Plectranthus Silver Shield
    Lemon Fluff
    Verbena "Imagination"
ANYTHING *scented* Chocolate or spicy/clove mmmmmm...
Toadflax - Northern Lights - must... have... more!
    Agastache Purple Pygmy
    Hyssop officinalis - true hyssop
Salvia - any true Blue - Cambridge Blue would be nice! (I have blue bedder)
Million Bells - aka Calibrachoa/miniature petunia

For anybody in the other swaps I'm in (the Fall Harvest Fresh Seed Swap, the Big One Time Seed Trade, and the Wintersowing seed swap), the list may look familiar because I haven't received any seeds back from these swaps yet. So if you know I'm getting any of these, please just let Julie know so she can give any of those seeds to others; I don't need lots of any one kind (okay, except maybe the toadflax ;-)... )

Looking forward to an email from Julie with mailing information; I want to get this envelope out on or before Wednesday. I don't have a lot to offer but they're interesting (at least I think so) and I do have a couple of wishes filled already. I don't really mind if I don't get anything back either. But it's fun to take a chance either way, and my seed box needed to lose a little more weight. :-)

Strange question - would somebody like to adopt a packet of several packets of named hot peppers with anywhere from 1 to 10 seeds each? I don't need anything in return, just want somebody to adopt them. They came from a very generous hot pepper guru on GardenWeb last year and I got germination from several of them (and am overwintering three now) but just don't have the space anymore and would like to not waste these. Some names (off the top of my head) are Friggitelo, Fluorescent Purple, Lemon Drop, Flamme, Georgia Flame, to name a few.

Julie, I am almost finished -- just looking for some seeds I *know* I have but cannot find anywhere! LOL!

About how many do you want? I have 115 packs now, divided about 50/50 between what people want and things I think they may like, but I can send more if you want.

    Hey there Terri-
Welcome to the exchange! It is grand to have you along to join in the fun! Your peppers would be a very welcome addition either as selections for folks- or in the general mix. My seed box(s!) also need to lose weight, but presently- they are still gaining, and fast too. Look for mail from me...
Lime; I think what ever you wish to send in is fine! 115 is a bunch already! And so many personally selected for folks is just wonderful! I know what you mean about those elusive seed packs.... I start to wonder just how many areas I have set things aside to dry a bit....
Hey there Drippy- Ya- Sure- You betcha there are many seeds sent in for the general mix that fit nicely into several wants! Several I found just by memory alone! Thanks for sending so many packets in!
This is really shaping up to be quite a fine exchange with so many wonderful players!
    Thanks all-

:-) There are 12 types of hot peppers; I'll send in all the peppers in one packet, and Julie can distribute them as she sees fit. Thanks for adopting them! Rec'd your email, Julie; my packet will go out by tomorrow, if not today. It will be *much* smaller than Limequilla's (could this be "packet envy" I'm feeling?!) ;-) but hopefully some things you will find interesting. :-)

    Julie:

I am still working on mine but they will be ready to go no later than Friday. A question for you about the limit of 5 of each kind: if I am sending them for specific people, can I send more than 5 packs or would you rather not? Mainly, I have salvias that are on wish lists, and there are some people in this swap that are not in the other ones I am doing.

    Oh yes Beckie-
If you think you have something fun or wonderful or odd that all may really enjoy- please- feel free to send more than 5 into the general mix- The random # of 5 is easily swayed for those special things we may have in abundance that we really want to share- that there may not be a great abundance sent in. The random #5 is to ensure that we all don't get many doubles or triples or more of more common seeds- it is suggested so that we may all enjoy a greater diversity.
I have a few seeds saved that are a favorite of mine that I hope to share with everyone- I actually grew extra to harvest just for this swap- I am calling those Bonus seeds- over and above what I am adding to this swap for exchange.
I hope you all feel like this is keeping in the spirit of this exchange that you signed up for- finding fun and wonderful seeds- some even off the beaten path for folks- and in your own returned envelope!
On another note- I have another envelope! Atravers full envelope arrived today!- and can you guess- another very nice selection of seeds was enclosed!
I am still waiting to hear from thehills2 - I do hope you will check this forum and see that I need you to contact me through my page- as I can not contact you to send you the information you need-
    My thanks to you all-
And I do hope you and yours all have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day-

My apologies all, I have been so busy putting together packets for the exchange I have not checked back. I am very excited about this swap, as being in Canada we have a much smaller group, and after a few large swaps there aren't too many folks left to trade with, so thanks for including me!

    Julie
I have sent you an email, and look forward to your letter, my email is now connected to my page as well (kdomay@hotmail.com). Sorry for the confusion. I am hoping I can post my package end of month as I will be in the US and we can avert any customs issues (US customs has recently begun taking seeds sent into the US, and sending the empty envelopes onto the recepients with a note!), there are no issues sending seeds back to Canada from the US however. So I hope that works, it would just ensure everyone's seeds arrive, but let me know.

Katie - For the seeds you listed you can have my entire tomato collection and whatever else I have to offer, I absolutely love butterfly bushes and they are very rare here. I will make a separate envelope for you and include in my mailer, PLMK if there is anything else I can include.

Laurel - Thanks so much, the seeds you listed are great I can send lots of the Iris for you, and would love even a few seeds of Blue Bird. The iris cultivar is Sun Cascade, and do let me know if you are seeking a large quantity, as I can include any number of fully stuffed ziplocs.

Tammy - If you haven't sent your mailer and have some left could you include some sparkler pinks and pink swirl hibiscus, I don't need a lot of these seeds, they are very hard to find here

Limequilla - If you have not sent in your mailer and have left Veronica Blue Fox, Hibiscus, Cleome and Baptisia, I would love these as well.

All please check my have list and let me know, more than happy to send mini packs for everyone. Email me direct kdomay@hotmail.com

My apolgies again all, please check my trade list and let me know if I can make a special envelope for you.

Hi all, This is so much fun! I have been going through peoples want lists and hope to have individual packs for a number of you. (P) Heliopsis Helianthoides "Summer Nights"
    (A) Hesperis Matronalis - "Violet" Dames Rocket

    Hey Kirsti,

I'm not too proud to ask for the Dwarf Cosmos, the Campanula Blue Chips and the Purple Ruffles Basil. LOL!

Zinnias were my favorite this year -- the butterflies were AMAZING!

Speaking of which, the Zinnias on my list, the mixed ones, were supposed to be in the other category about "I'll send 'em if you want 'em". I picked & harvested them by color, so I have single colors. I can't stress enough about the butterflies, but hummingbirds will also go after them.

I also forgot to list some Eremurus Shelford Hybrids from Brent and Becky. (Yellow Foxtail Lily)

    Hi Lime,

If you have enough, I'm interested in the Profusion Fire and Profusion Cherry zinnias, the mini red snapdragons, and the red marigolds (both varieties). I'd also be willing to give the Veronica 'Sunny Border Blue' a try - you just never know what's going to surprise you. Thank you!

Kirsti, I don't need a huge number of the iris - three to four dozen seeds will be fine, and if I get a couple dozen plants in the end I'll be set for planting a few in my yard and the rest by my parents' creek (which I'm trying to accent with water-loving plants near the edge). Thanks! I got a dozen or so seeds from 'Blue Bird' set aside for you, too.

Julie, I'm going to send my seed mailer out today, before I think of anything else to add to it, lol. I've already added to it three times, and had to open it once after sealing it by accident.

Roflol - I have an envelope for you as well with the Bronze fennel you mentioned above, also a few more things you might want I will send you an email to confirm.

Limequilla - "not to proud...", very funny, nor am I, you can never have too many tried and true proven performers in the garden, sent along a bonus pack of Carpatica white as well.

I sent my package out to you yesterday Julie. 3-5 packets each of 14 different varieties freshly harvested from my garden. After getting everything packaged up, I realized that I had not come back on this list to do the " person specific" matching. I apologize! I hope I've sent some things folks will like and I am very, very flexible about flower seeds I receive!

Wishing everyone a very happy and peaceful Thanksgiving with your families!

Fairydancer (Deb), I would love any of the Agastaches that you have, they are one of my favorite flowers and you have some I have never heard of..

Wanted to let you know, everything you asked about except the Digitalis Candy Mountain, will be no problem at all.. I spilled the package on the carpet today and the seeds are like dust and long gone.. *sigh*

    Thanks,
    Amy

    Hi there all-
Yep Ann- I posted back on the 20th that I had received your envelope- thanks again for the very nice selection sent in!
I received a few more envelopes today- Roflol, Clay Lady, Kliddle, and Nan6161! Whew- so many many great seeds you all have sent in!
I am using a laundry basket with an alpha-accordion file for the general swap- and individual pocket manila folders for each member- and I am already running out of room with only 13 member envelopes out of 38 members (so far) sent in! That IS a lot of seeds!- OK- a lot of paper too but hey-
Shilohyn - how ever many or few you send in is GREAT! The mix is wonderful too. They are sure to be appreciated by those who receive them!
I hope I have been answering questions as they appear on the board here- But some of the entries are being "squished" so that I can not read them- It must be time to start a new update thread- but I think I will wait till Sunday if I can. Please feel free to contact me by e-mail if I missed your important question-
    Thanks-
