they're fledging right now!!

I got to see two fly away.. is it alright they aren't in trees? should I keep an eye on them? I'm afraid my presence is keeping mom and dad away.. can't have that!!

My heart is pounding and I'm almost in tears! it was just dumb luck I caught them going.. I got some pics, nothing like daves, no sun today.. but these are my babies! I'll post them on my post later.. looks like I won't be working much today!

I am so happy to find this post. I have almost the opposite problem - I live in the hot wet tropics, never cold. I purchased some Crocus (Saffron) corms (was very expensive here so trying to not make mistakes). I put them in my veggie drawer in the refrigerator (all fruits removed from fridge) at 3C/37F. I read that they must have a cold period of at least 15 weeks to have a proper healthy bloom. After being in the fridge less than 3 weeks, each are having a white sprout coming out the top, but no roots. So do: 1. Ignore and wait the 15 weeks (will they starve to death?) or 2. Plant now (they are going in a pot) being very careful not to break the tender shoots and water only once until green shoots emerge from the soil? Thank you so much for the help, Christa

I plan to make all my seedlings (that I can handle) flower, then force them for the following year, and give away. I already promised the first one for Cindeea, for she sent me seeds, the second one for Maria, for her seeds... And then the rest will go to Project Angelfood. Hopefully they will see it as a nice gesture and not an unnecessary burden. :o)

I've got snap peas! It will be awhile for the snow and shell peas. There won't be many of those. I've got the longest pea trellis ever, over a 4' bed. It's 40', but there is only one. Building 3+ trellises each year may be only history. I like peas! Pulled another Viking Purple potato plant yesterday and had creamed snap peas and new potatoes for dinner! (I've just finished the left-overs for lunch. :o) I better leave the potatoes alone for 3 weeks, at least. Those 2 plants didn't have quite 3# of spuds between 'em. If I'm gonna get 1#/square foot - they are gonna have to do better than that. Bok choy seed can go in that potato bed this month, as soon as the spuds are harvested. Oooorr I can plant more snow pea seed in that bed, Cat'. Yep, that last, very hot week of July, should give me pea pods and vine tendrils about the first of October. Steve who just might have a zucchini, soon.

Hey Donna, wonder where your Blues went? Glad you got to seem some again. Our Blues are still around, mom and dad who are still looking horrible during their molting stage. The three first nesting fledgling girls who are looking pretty nice in their nice new adult colors and the four little ones from the second nesting. One day they even brought a male fledgling with them that was in the same stage of changing colors as the first nesting fledglings were. I have seen him twice now. He looks at the mealworm feeder but won't go inside. I see and hear the beautiful Blues every day both here and down at the park where I walk. They only have about a month and a half before I know they will be gone until next Spring but I am so glad they all seem to be healthy and sticking around for now. Donna

Congrats! It can take a little while to get them up in the trees. I had one last year that could not fly so I put him back in the box for another night with a guard on so he couldnt get out but Mom could get her head in to feed him. He flew off late the next day.

My pictures are nothing like Dave's either, but boy would I be thrilled to have a photo of my baby blues first day out like you caught. Baby Blue begging from Dad his first time in a tree is so awesome. Congratulations!!

thanks so much everyone! It was a wonderful day to be sure! We sat outside yesterday and got to see them hunting for bugs at the back or our property.. the babies were up and down on the branches..

Mom and day came to the feeder and I've never saw them eat SO much at one time. The youngens must be putting a strain on them! Just think, without our help the blues wouldn't thrive as well as they do.. I'm just proud to be helpful to such lovely creatures!

BTW, a sparrow was in the house as soon as the babies fledged, WITH a spooker on!! YIKES!!
